The Gender Legacy of the Mao Era: Women’s Life Stories in Contemporary China

Xin Huang, SUNY Press, 2018

China’s Mao era lasted from 1949 to 1976, and its reverberations are felt to this day. Huang – an assistant professor of women’s and gender studies – takes a closer look at how the Maoist model for women as socialist laborers still affects Chinese women. Huang traces the lives of four women as they experience, perform or challenge the Maoist and prerevolutionary gender ideals of the past, as well as the new gender expectations of the present.
