Peer Health Educators to host mental health fair, participate in mental health 5K walk

The Mental Health Awareness Fair coordinated by the UWM Peer Health Educators will be held on Wednesday, May 9, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., in Spaights Plaza. There will be information and activities that will educate students about mental illness and the resources available on campus and in the community for students.

The Taking Strides for Healthy Minds team will also be recruiting student, faculty and staff participants for the Greater Milwaukee National Alliance on Mental Illness 5K walk. The walk will be on Saturday, May 19, 9:30-11 a.m. at Veteran’s Park. There is no registration fee, but donations will be accepted.

Participation in the walk increases awareness about the importance of addressing mental health concerns. The Peer Health Educators, Norris Health Center staff, UWM University Counseling Services and the campus community support the walk annually.

Last year, the team raised over $5,000 to support the various free programs that the alliance offers in the community.

Other UWM teams participating include UWM Student Occupational Therapy Association, Norris Health Center and National Alliance on Mental Illness at UWM.
