New Mobile Design Box gallery opens

The School of Architecture & Urban Planning opened its third Mobile Design Box pop-up gallery as part of Milwaukee Gallery Night festivities on Jan. 20.

Friday’s event marked the third Mobile Design Box pop-up gallery since the initiative launched in 2015 to showcase the work and ideas of Architecture & Urban Planning faculty, staff and students. Mobile Design Box has a new, temporary home in Milwaukee’s Historic Concordia Neighborhood in a vacant storefront donated by Wiegand Enterprises.

“We’re delighted to move into Milwaukee’s Historic Concordia Neighborhood,” said Mobile Design Box founder Mo Zell, an associate dean in Architecture & Urban Planning. “The galleries allow us to physically transform vacant spaces into active community rooms where design thinking and pioneering research facilitate a dialogue with community stakeholders. The exhibition, Place Acts, gives art lovers and Milwaukee enthusiasts new ways and places to explore our work – and new insights into our neighborhoods.”

Near West Side Partners, Inc. co-hosted the grand opening.

“This is a great chance to showcase the progress our neighborhoods have made in the last two years,” said Keith Stanley, executive director of Near West Side Partners. “It’s an opportunity to promote the unique opportunities that businesses can take advantage of in our neighborhoods.”

The Place Acts exhibition is curated by Associate Professor Arijit Sen and features the work of artist Muneer Bahauddeen and his students from the Express Yourself Milwaukee Program. The Place Acts exhibition will run Jan. 20 to March 31 in the Mobile Design Box at 753 N. 27th St. For more information, visit facebook.com/mobiledesignbox.
