Most years, UWM employees rent plots at various spots around campus to create their own gardens at work. But this is not a normal year.
The coronavirus pandemic closed campus this spring and much of the summer, so the garden plots are closed too. Only essential workers can be on campus.
Rather than let all that good dirt go to waste, a team of workers from the campus Office of Sustainability are planting and tending the gardens. The food grown there will be donated to the UWM Food Center and Pantry, providing a supply of fresh produce for those in need. Demand at the food pantry has mushroomed amid the pandemic lockdown.
The effort harkens back through the decades. During both world wars, the fields at what is now Engelmann Stadium were planted with produce to help alleviate food shortages.
