Black Feminist Symposium planned for Feb. 23

Join the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee community as we kick off the first Black Feminist Symposium, organized by the Women’s Resource Center. This year’s theme is Risk, Resistance, and Resilience.

The purpose of the symposium is to recognize historical and contemporary  movements  to achieve social justice and human rights as it relates to gender, engage in critical self-reflection, promote self-awareness and connect knowledge and experience, theory and activism, as well as academia and practice.

The goals of the Black Feminist Symposium are to:

  • Discuss black feminism and related theories.
  • Provide a supportive and intellectually stimulating environment where students, faculty and community members can collaborate and share ideas between their work, research and black feminism.
  • Explore creative collaborations that have a foundation in black feminist practice, such as community organizing.

Through workshops and dynamic keynote speakers, we will identify the interactions and intersections of identities (e.g., gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexuality) and assess the ways in which they contribute to instances of privilege and power dynamics across cultures, space and time.

The symposium will be held in the UWM Golda Meir Library. For more information, please contact the Women’s Resource Center at 414-229-2852.
