Emergency grant can help struggling students

As the new semester is underway, the Dean of Students office is asking faculty and staff to be on the lookout for students facing financial distress that could lead to them dropping out.

To help alleviate unexpected money-related stress, UWM offers emergency grants to help students facing situations such as medical bills, housing expenses, utilities, child care and food expenses.

The grant is offered for undergraduate students and is awarded in amounts up to $1,000. The grant covers non-academic expenses and does not include bills related to tuition, legal fees and books.

Specific eligibility requirements are detailed through the Dean of Students webpage. Please note that students who have already received emergency grant funding are not eligible. Documents to support financial emergencies (bills or estimates) are required upon applying.

Students can apply at the Dean of Students Office in Student Union Room 345, or online.

Faculty and staff are also asked to consider making a contribution to the emergency fund. Any size contribution is welcome as this is a community effort. To make a contribution go to the Advancing UWM webpage. In the designation box, click “other” and enter “UWM Fund 6020.” All of your contributions will go directly to the student emergency grant.
