The very first step we recommend international students take before searching for housing is to secure guest housing with UWM. Guest housing provides you with a guaranteed temporary living space while you search for more long-term housing around the UWM area.
We strongly recommend contacting Guest Housing by either email or phone to make arrangements for your first few weeks to one month in Milwaukee. Do this as soon as you know when you will be coming to Milwaukee to make sure guest housing does not fill up. Guest housing also allows for spouses and families with children for a temporary period, so all guests are welcomed.
Another option you may want to consider is booking an Airbnb in the Milwaukee area. Airbnb allows for up guests to stay up to 10 nights in a 12 month period, so this may provide you a place to stay for a short period while finalizing housing plans.
Why You Should Wait to Move Off-Campus
If you are able, it is best to live in campus housing for a semester or even year before searching for rentals in the surrounding community.
The Neighborhood Housing Office offers the Preferred Tenant Program during the school year, which is a free 3 hour class (meal included) that teaches students how to rent in Milwaukee and different laws and rules to be aware of. At the end of this class, students receive a Preferred Tenant Discount card, which can save them 2% off monthly rent or $250 off a security deposit with participating landlords. Moving into University Housing, taking this class, and then looking for off-campus housing the following year can help save some money on rent and better prepare you for renting in the City of Milwaukee.
