Do I need renter’s insurance and how much does renter’s insurance cost per month?

The Neighborhood Housing Office strongly encourages all tenants (even students who live in University Housing) to purchase a renter’s insurance plan! This is a low-cost solution to losses caused by incidents such as theft or fire. Typically costs range from $10-$12 per month, for about $20,000 worth of coverage. This is dependent upon the plan and the provider you select. If your parents are homeowners or you and/or your parents have car insurance, you should check with your or your parent’s homeowner’s or auto insurance to see if you get a discounted rate for multiple policies.
