Biennial Variability and ENSO

Mr. James Ryan
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
MS Graduate Student – Teaching Assistant

“Quasibiennial cycles in ENSO (El Nino-Southern Oscillation) have proven to be mysterious in our understanding and predictability of this important teleconnection. Sources for ENSO’s irregularity, including recharge mechanisms and ocean’s slow responses compared to the atmosphere, seem to be irregular, with spectral peaks at 4-7 years. However, a quasibiennial bandpass filter reveals that cycles that repeat every 18-42 months play a major role, despite their lesser role on the power spectrum, letting major ENSO events have spikes of biennial variability, even if it’s not every two years. Observations are then compared against major climate models to assess their handling of ENSO.”
