Emmy Noether: Symmetry and Conservation Laws

Alexander Heaton
University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
PhD Graduate Student

“Whenever the laws of motion of some physical system have a symmetry, there is some corresponding conserved quantity. For example, an asteroid tumbling through outer space has laws of motion which are invariant under rotations. From this, we obtain conservation of angular momentum. Emmy Noether proved the general theorem in 1918. We will try to understand it through examples.”
