DESCRIPTION:Investigating Various Approaches to the 3x+1 Problem\nDaniel Gulbrandsen\nUniversity of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\nPhD Graduate Student \n“The 3x+1 problem\, also known as the Collatz Conjecture\, is easy enough to write down. Begin with any positive integer. If the integer is even\, divide by it 2. If the integer is odd\, multiply it by 3 then add 1. Reiterate this process. The conjecture is that\, no matter what positive integer we begin with\, we will eventually iterate to 1.\nDespite how easy the problem is to write down\, a solution to the Collatz conjecture has eluded the many mathematicians who have attempted to solve it. However\, there is still much we can learn from the different approaches people have taken to the problem. In this talk\, we will investigate a number of these approaches. In the process we will gain insight into how mathematicians approach unsolved problems”. \n
