Community of Practice: Imposter Syndrome – Tricks or Treats?
Intelligence is knowing a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing that you shouldn’t put it in a fruit salad. But no matter how you look at it, the one thing that is undeniable is that it belongs in the produce aisle.
It’s easy to become hypercritical of qualifications and abilities of not just tomatoes, but of ourselves. So much so that we start to go through our days seeing ourselves as undeserving of the positions we have worked so hard to put ourselves in. This thought process is known as imposter syndrome and is a common thought pattern that is especially seen in academia. This Friday, we’ll be discussing the issues that these perceptions can cause and what we can do both as individuals and as a community to overcome them.
Embrace your imposter! Costumes welcome!

What is the Community of Practice?
The Community of Practice is a space for everyone in the department (lecturers, GTAs, faculty) to come together and have chats, professional development, speakers, workshops, and more related to teaching and learning. There’s no sign-up; simply attend if you want! If you would like to be involved in any planning or would like to run a session, please email me (henathan@uwm.edu) and let me know.
The Community of Practice Canvas Site
