“Introductory calculus is a struggle for many students. Even those who are successful in calculus courses often hold weak understandings of concepts that underlie the procedures they routinely use. I will share data from first-semester calculus students’ work on problems that address the foundational concepts of rate of change and accumulation without providing explicit equations to manipulate. We will see that students take a wide variety of approaches to these types of problems—some more productive than others. We will also discuss ways to use students’ existing knowledge to connect procedures like calculating derivatives and definite integrals with an understanding of the key concepts that underlie those procedures.”
