Title:
Rubik’s Cube Turns 40 Years Old
Description/Abstract:
The Rubik’s cube is probably the most mathematical popular toy of all time. This will be a general survey talk suitable for anyone interested in math or puzzles. We’ll look at some basic properties of the permutation group which the cube embodies. We’ll also trace the story of determining how many moves are needed to solve the hardest puzzle patterns. I’ll have my personal collection of cubes and cube-type puzzles along to play with before and after the talk.
