Topological Data Analysis: Developments and Applications

Description/Abstract:
 “What is the shape of your data?” What may have been regarded as a peculiar question a few years ago, today is being frequently asked and answered, with powerful results. Topological Data Analysis (TDA), a growing collection of data analysis methods rooted in algebraic topology, is helping scientists extract useful geometric features from data, both static and dynamic. This talk will serve as an introduction to TDA and a demonstration of how meaningful conclusions can be drawn by accessing latent geometric structure in complex, often high-dimensional data. In particular, since shape-based features naturally compliment machine learning methodologies, I will also discuss recent efforts to strengthen the bridge between machine learning and TDA. I’ll end with a few thoughts on future directions and applications.
