What\u2019s the hardest part of attending college? Some would say that it\u2019s picking a major. Many students begin their freshman year without knowing their career path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the reason that college and career planning throughout elementary, middle, and high school is essential. As students are exposed to more career fields, skill sets, and job specifics, they can begin to narrow down their likes and dislikes, and to truly picture themselves in different job roles. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This March and April, Milwaukee Public Schools students took a leap forward on their career pathways by attending MPS Student Job Fairs. Students looking for part-time, summer, and full-time work after graduation had the chance to visit with dozens of employers, ask questions, fill out applications, and get ready for work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two fairs were hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee as part of the M-Cubed partnership that links UWM, MPS, and MATC<\/a>. The March event for juniors brought in nearly 600 students and 55 employers. In April, the job fair for seniors was attended by about 465 students and 68 employers, putting the event at capacity for employers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Attendees chatted with employers that included the fast food and restaurant industry, health care, recreation, entertainment, summer festivals, and a wide range of businesses that depend on teenage workers. In addition to filling out applications and finding out about immediate openings, they also had opportunities to learn more about career options and long-term positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI learned about some really interesting jobs in health care,\u201d said one student. \u201cThey said that people always need health care, so there are always jobs available. I never saw myself as a nurse, but other areas sound really cool. I\u2019m definitely going to find out more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The MPS Student Job Fairs are now in their ninth year, and a number of employers come back year after year. \u201cIt\u2019s exciting that students come with their eyes wide open,\u201d said an employer. \u201cIn addition to needing a job now, many are shopping for careers and are making future plans. We talked with many bright, eager students at the fair, and it was fun to meet our future workforce.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
