{"id":1756,"date":"2024-11-21T10:05:08","date_gmt":"2024-11-21T16:05:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/m-cubed\/?p=1756"},"modified":"2025-04-28T16:04:50","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T21:04:50","slug":"full-cooperation-m%c2%b3-partnership-wins-wisconsin-policy-forum-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/m-cubed\/news\/full-cooperation-m%c2%b3-partnership-wins-wisconsin-policy-forum-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Full Cooperation: M\u00b3 Partnership Wins Wisconsin Policy Forum Award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Initiative between Milwaukee Area Technical College, Milwaukee Public Schools and UWM recognized for intergovernmental cooperation<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"664\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/m-cubed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/427\/2024\/11\/m3-award-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1757\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/m-cubed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/427\/2024\/11\/m3-award-2.png 960w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/m-cubed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/427\/2024\/11\/m3-award-2-300x208.png 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/m-cubed\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/427\/2024\/11\/m3-award-2-768x531.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Milwaukee Public Schools, Milwaukee Area Technical College and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee certainly work well together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A partnership between the three educational entities called M\u00b3 (pronounced M-Cubed) has won an award for intergovernmental cooperation from the Wisconsin Policy Forum, a nonpartisan, independent organization that analyzes issues affecting local governments, school districts, and the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Representatives of the M\u00b3 partners \u2014&nbsp; MATC President Anthony Cruz, MPS Interim Superintendent Eduardo Galv\u00e1n and UWM Chancellor Mark Mone, Ph.D. \u2014 accepted the award November 13 at the forum\u2019s 32nd annual Salute to Local Government event at the Italian Community Center in Milwaukee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that we can do so much more together than any of our organizations could accomplish individually,\u201d Dr. Mone said at the event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Mone praised the work of employees at all three institutions and acknowledged the generous support of the initiative\u2019s philanthropic partners.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCollaboration, with each other, with businesses and foundations, and with faculty and parents, has resulted in more MPS students pursuing higher education,\u201d Dr. Mone said. \u201cAnd we know education improves life outcomes for these students, which has a positive, cascading effect on our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since its creation in January 2015, M3&nbsp;has worked to transform the future of Milwaukee through education by increasing graduation and retention rates, preparing a skilled workforce, and creating an entrepreneurial mindset among students that encourages growth and career success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the partnership approaches the close of its first decade, it has yielded substantial results, according to the 2024 M\u00b3 Impact Report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 700 MPS 12th graders have earned 8,000 college credits at UWM or MATC as part of M\u00b3 College Connections, saving almost $2.6 million in tuition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, nearly 900 MPS 11th grade students took advantage of M\u00b3 Milwaukee Direct Admit, which allows juniors at any MPS high school to apply for free and be accepted into MATC and UWM.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nearly 1,000 MPS college-bound seniors participated in the first two years of Smart Start, a program that engages MPS students interested in college during the spring and summer before college, then helps them navigate the first semester at MATC or UWM.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 3,100 faculty and staff from the three institutions have met to improve students\u2019 learning transition from middle and high school to higher education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 5,000 MPS students have explored careers at M\u00b3 work-based learning job fairs, and 10,000 MPS ninth and 10th grade students toured MATC and UWM campuses as part of M\u00b3 academic and career planning efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The M\u00b3 partnership\u2019s executive leadership is transitioning with Dr. Cruz as the new president of MATC and Galv\u00e1n as the interim superintendent of MPS. Also, a new chancellor is expected at UWM in 2025 to replace Mone, who is returning to teaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs leaders, we remain committed to this impactful partnership and the shared infrastructure we have built to advance it,\u201d said Dr. Cruz, who started at MATC in July.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M\u00b3 is no stranger to recognition for its efforts, In October 2019, the partnership earned an award at the University Economic Development Association\u2019s national conference. M\u00b3 was lauded for showing how putting the right people in the right environment can benefit the community and economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mps.milwaukee.k12.wi.us\/en\/District\/Initiatives\/M-cubed.htm\"><strong><em>About M\u00b3 (M-Cubed)<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>:<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0Founded in the spring of 2015, M\u00b3 seeks to transform the future of Milwaukee through education.
