{"id":1751,"date":"2024-10-29T13:16:23","date_gmt":"2024-10-29T18:16:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/m-cubed\/?p=1751"},"modified":"2024-10-29T13:16:24","modified_gmt":"2024-10-29T18:16:24","slug":"work-based-learning-team-getting-students-ready-for-the-world-of-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/m-cubed\/news\/work-based-learning-team-getting-students-ready-for-the-world-of-work\/","title":{"rendered":"Work-Based Learning Team Getting Students Ready for the World of Work"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The M\u00b3 (pronounced M-Cubed) <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/m-cubed\/programs\/work-based-learning\/\"><strong>Work-Based Learning Team<\/strong><\/a> continues to prepare today\u2019s students to be tomorrow\u2019s skilled professionals by forging meaningful connections with regional employers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, the team plans to host a Work Readiness Conference and two job fairs for high school juniors and seniors. The events, scheduled for March 19, 2025 (for junior students) and April 9, 2025 (for seniors), will be at the University of Wisconsin\u2013Milwaukee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Principals, counselors, teachers, parents and community partners can help the team by:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Helping plan the 2025 Work Readiness Conference<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Presenting at the 2025 Work Readiness Conference<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hosting a table at the career fairs&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Encouraging <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/WBLcommitment\"><strong>regional employers to partner with M\u00b3<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2025 events will build on what the team accomplished in 2024.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More than 1,000 students attended two career fairs held at UWM, where hundreds of employers distributed information. Surveys taken following the fairs showed that 94% of employers at the events planned to hire our students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On August 22, 2024, the team recognized 400 regional employers that have partnered with M\u00b3 to develop a workforce pipeline for the Milwaukee area. The appreciation breakfast, held at Milwaukee Area Technical College\u2019s Downtown Milwaukee Campus, honored industry partners for giving students valuable opportunities to explore the working world.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are in this together with our M\u00b3 partners and with our employers,\u201d said MATC President Anthony Cruz, Ed.D., at the event. \u201cYou are the engine that drives our economy. With your valuable help, our students can learn what to expect in the workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The participating businesses support M\u00b3 efforts by offering internships, participating in job fairs, sharing career information with students, and connecting what students learn in class with the skills they need to succeed, said MPS Interim Superintendent Eduardo Galv\u00e1n.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese connections are so impactful,\u201d Galv\u00e1n said. \u201cThey help students to not only find out what they might like to do, but also what they might not want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M\u00b3 partners view employers as co-educators, said Laurie Marks, executive director of UWM\u2019s Center for Student Experience and Talent. \u201cStudents absorb and understand the working world so much better when employers are in the room,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the breakfast, the Aviation Careers Education (ACE) program, managed by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation Bureau of Aeronautics, won the Paving the Pathway Award, given to an employer that provides exemplary opportunities to students and helps them advance in their educational journeys.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ACE is an ideal example of effective collaboration between schools, industry and government, said Tamera Coleman, MPS internship coordinator. \u201cThis program has been a trailblazer,\u201d she added.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 1,000 students have learned about aviation careers in the 35 years ACE has operated, said Max Platts, Wisconsin Department of Transportation\u2019s Aeronautical &amp; Technical Services section chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a unique program and super special,\u201d Platts said as he accepted the award at the event. \u201cWe have been able to have so many students explore an industry that has so many options and opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the program\u2019s eight-week internship, students work 40 hours a week at Milwaukee\u2019s Mitchell International Airport and experience every function in aviation, from boarding a plane, seeing air control tower operations and fixing aircraft, said Olivia Conklin, the program\u2019s education manager.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of those students was Mohammed Hameed, who graduated from Milwaukee Public Schools\u2019 Bradley Tech High School and is in MATC\u2019s Aviation Maintenance Technician program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At one point in high school, Hameed wanted to be a pilot, so he signed up for the ACE program.
