LEC Presents Former Pixar Animator and Geek Week Speaker Matthew Luhn

We recorded some important quotes from Matthew Luhn’s presentation and subsequent meet-and-greet. Read below!

“It’s really about taking chances and trying new ideas.”

“Fail fast and try something new.”

Regarding the value of education in relation to creativity: “You need to learn the rules in order to be impactful and relatable”

“Surround yourself with people who challenge you and are equal or are superior in talent, because that’s what will make you better.”

“Don’t care about the money, just care.”

“All of us have had moments in our life where we wanted to do something that everyone says is impossible. It’s a universal theme.”

“I wish I would’ve been a little more brave about making things that were above my capabilities. I wish I would have been braver about taking big chances.”

Here is what students had to say about what they learned:

“The major takeaway that I got from Matthew Luhn was that you can’t have a good story (script, movie, branding—really, you can tell a story anywhere) without some sort of conflict or concurrence; you need both. Having negative events or darkness helps bring empathy, while positivity and lightness enhances focus. By using both you’re able to draw people into your message.” – Casey Phipps

“Matthew Luhn talked about losing your authentic self in your work, job, degree, etc. I have been struggling with this a lot through college. Hearing how Luhn dealt with the same issue was incredibly helpful. To sum up his advice, ‘take time to pursue your passions, and don’t let those get lost in your work, let them help drive it.'” – MJ Horinek
