Fall 2016 Semester Welcome

Welcome back for Fall 2016! The start of the Fall semester always brings new opportunities and changes. Here are a number of notable updates for Fall 2016:

Free Faculty Website Migration

The L&S Web Team is here to help move faculty websites from PantherFILE (or elsewhere) to CampusPress. This service is provided for free to all L&S faculty as a way to help you through the upcoming closure of PantherFILE.

Time is running out before PantherFILE goes away! If you need assistance moving your website, send in a website support request as soon as you can.

Upcoming PantherFILE Retirement

UWM’s PantherFile storage service will go away at the end of 2016. You can use these instructions to find out what’s in your account and to migrate any files to OneDrive. If you have files that you need help moving to another service, please submit a PantherFile retirement survey.

Don’t forget that free network file storage is available to L&S faculty and departments.

Self-Service Software

Looking for software? Try using the Self-Service Software Center!

All L&S PCs and Macs are equipped with self-service software applications that allow you to install a variety of free applications and volume licenses that L&S or UWM have already purchased. Additional applications are available at great discounts through the campus SoftwareShop.

Classroom Software Requests

As a reminder, any instructional software required for classrooms/labs must be requested a minimum of 5 business days in advance to ensure proper development/testing time. Software requests can be submitted as a Support Request or as part of a Lab Reservation.

Network Printing Issue

A recent Microsoft security update may impact your ability to add new network printers to L&S PCs. L&S Macs are unaffected by these issues. When trying to add a network printer, you may receive the error:

A policy is in effect on your computer which prevents you from connecting to this print queue.

Campus IT staff have updated affected network printers, but some isolated issues may persist through the first few weeks of the school year.

If you have questions or encounter any issues with network printing, please fill out a support request with as much detail as possible.

New Antivirus Software for Macs

Microsoft’s “Endpoint Protection” (anti-virus) previously replaced McAfee’s “VirusScan” as UWM’s official software. Over the coming weeks, the updated Endpoint Protection client will be distributed automatically to all L&S Macs.

Supporting You

As always, the L&S IT Office is here to help with all of your technology support needs. Feel free to contact us with any tech questions you may have.

We hope you have a great semester!
