{"id":42393,"date":"2024-02-02T14:46:01","date_gmt":"2024-02-02T20:46:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/libraries\/?post_type=tribe_events&#038;p=42393"},"modified":"2024-04-15T14:46:19","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T19:46:19","slug":"deception-machines","status":"publish","type":"tribe_events","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/libraries\/event\/deception-machines\/","title":{"rendered":"When Silicon Hallucinates: Deception Machines in an Age of Ontological Crisis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Presented by David Witzling, UWM Peck School of the Arts.<\/p>\n<p>In the present moment, \u201ctruth\u201d is becoming an increasingly contested term.\u00a0 Between fake news, UFO disclosure, and popular deep fakes, generative AI will play an increasingly prominent role in complicating perceptions of \u201creality.\u201d\u00a0 The role of AI systems in our unfolding ontological crisis will fall along multiple lines: deception as an implicit and explicit design goal for AI systems; the autonomous nature of AI bots in an increasingly online world; the increasingly deregulated corporate interests funding the development of AI systems; and the protected \u201cspeech\u201d status of public-facing corporate information systems.\u00a0 Curbing the development of AI systems might sound like an anti-progress position, but it is also one firmly grounded in the economics of diminishing returns, and a humanistic conception of \u201cgovernment for the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Register here<\/strong>:<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/libraries\/digital-humanities\/dh-lab-events\/dh-event-registration-silicon-hallucinates\/\">\u00a0https:\/\/uwm.edu\/libraries\/digital-humanities\/dh-lab-events\/dh-event-registration-silicon-hallucinates\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Presented by David Witzling, UWM Peck School of the Arts.
