{"id":48405,"date":"2026-05-07T11:55:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T16:55:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/libraries\/?p=48405"},"modified":"2026-05-07T11:57:03","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T16:57:03","slug":"maps-atlases-gift","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/libraries\/2026\/05\/07\/maps-atlases-gift\/","title":{"rendered":"American Geographical Society Library\u00a0Acquires 18th-Century Maps, Restores\u00a0Atlases with Gift from\u00a0the Order\u00a0of Founder and Patriots of America\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The American Geographical Society Library recently&nbsp;acquired&nbsp;two 18<sup>th<\/sup>-century maps and restored two 18th-century atlases thanks to a gift from the&nbsp;John Quincy Adams Foundation of the&nbsp;Order of Founders and Patriots of America.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;French-language 1776 map from German cartographer Matth\u00e4us Albrecht Lotter depicts the British Colonies&nbsp;and portions of the Great Lakes Region&nbsp;at the outbreak of the American Revolution.&nbsp;Additionally, the AGSL&nbsp;acquired&nbsp;a 1777 map from French cartographer Maurille Antoine Moithey. Another map of the fledgling United States, it traces early events of the Revolutionary War with added historical context.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/collections.lib.uwm.edu\/digital\/collection\/agdm\/id\/37079\/rec\/1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1776<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/collections.lib.uwm.edu\/digital\/collection\/agdm\/id\/37083\/rec\/2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1777<\/a>&nbsp;maps&nbsp;have been digitized by library staff and are available to view online.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the maps, the AGSL also restored\u00a0two atlases from 1776:\u00a0<em>A topographical description of such parts of North America as are contained in the (annexed) map of the middle British colonies &amp; in North America\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>The American military pocket atlas: being an approved collection of correct maps, both general and particular; of the\u00a0British\u00a0colonies; especially those which now are, or probably may be the theatre of war.\u00a0<\/em>The\u00a0<em>Description of North America\u00a0<\/em>highlights\u00a0first-hand\u00a0accounts of the British Colonies from the point of view of British soldiers.\u00a0The\u00a0<em>American\u00a0Military\u00a0Pocket\u00a0Atlas<\/em>\u00a0includes\u00a0six\u00a0maps of the British Colonies based on surveys done by the British navy and army.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both atlases can be viewed in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/libraries\/agsl\/agsl-visit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AGSL<\/a>,&nbsp;located&nbsp;on the third floor, east wing of the Golda Meir Library.
