The cost of these materials&nbsp;can add $1,000 in costs on top of tuition each semester, forcing students to choose between purchasing textbooks and basic needs or to work more and study less to afford textbooks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Faced with these choices, students often forego purchasing required textbooks and over half of students delay purchasing them until their financial aid is available.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, readings and assignments begin the first week of classes and when students have first-day access to materials they do better in the course (<a href=\"https:\/\/dl.acm.org\/doi\/10.1145\/3027385.3027437\">Agnihotri, Essa &amp; Baker, 2017<\/a>). The Library is taking steps to make course materials more affordable so that students have a strong start to the semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-does-the-library-help-with-textbook-nbsp-affordability-nbsp\">How does the Library help with textbook&nbsp;affordability?&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Library cannot purchase every textbook for every course on campus, we can help in a few important ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/guides.library.uwm.edu\/oers\">Open Textbooks<\/a> The Library supports faculty in\u00a0selecting open textbooks and open educational resources for your courses. Open Textbooks and OER are high quality, no\/low-cost course materials.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/guides.library.uwm.edu\/c.php?g=1011697&amp;p=7328633\">The Library Collection<\/a> Digital books, journals, databases and primary sources can be linked in UWM Canvas courses.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/libraries\/media\/\">Media and Reserve Services<\/a> Borrow copies\u00a0of textbooks and equipment you may need for your courses.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/libraries\/ill\/d2l\">Interlibrary Loan<\/a> Faculty can request digital\u00a0copies of articles and book chapters for Canvas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-textbook-affordability-consultations-for-faculty\">Textbook affordability consultations for Faculty<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are in the process of reviewing your textbook and would like to explore affordable options, please contact us for a consultation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"uwm-c-list--contact uwm-c-list--cleanlist\">\n<li><i class=\"fa-solid fa-envelope fa-fw\"><\/i><a href=\"mailto:open-textbook@uwm.edu\">open-textbook@uwm.edu<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-finding-no-low-cost-textbook-courses-in-the-schedule-of-classes\">Finding no\/low cost textbook courses in the Schedule of Classes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If the total cost for textbooks in your class is less than $25, faculty can include this information in the Schedule of Classes.
