SUMMARY:A Polychromatic Proposition
DESCRIPTION:Owen Jones\, Chromolithography\, and the Decorative Arts in the Nineteenth Century\nShowcasing Special Collections’ collection of design portfolios and decorative-arts books of the late nineteenth century\, this exhibition celebrates chromolithographic printing alongside design propositions from the mid-19th century The Grammar of Ornament by noted British architect and designer Owen Jones (1809-1874). Large portfolios that claim to examine decoration from all cultures and all time periods mingle with ephemera highlighting the ubiquity of chromolithography during its period of dominance in printing. \nCurated by Special Collections Graduate Intern Amanda Haag\, A Polychromatic Proposition: Owen Jones\, Chromolithography\, and the Decorative Arts in the Nineteenth Century is on view through May 20 in the fourth floor exhibition gallery at the Golda Meir Library.

SUMMARY:Special Collections Graduate Intern Exhibits
DESCRIPTION:Now through May 21\, patrons can visit the Special Collections reading room to view exhibits curated by UWM Art History graduate students Kate Lytvynenko and Olivia Young\, who spent their spring 2026 fieldwork experience in Special Collections.\n\nLytvynenko’s exhibit showcases her interest in Ukrainian art\, history\, and culture\, and her selections offer a perspective of Ukraine as viewed through the lens of those who would control it\, highlighting the history of that country’s long struggle for sovereignty. Young’s focus is on the Pre-Raphaelites and late 19th-/early 20th-century European art — her exhibit presents turn-of-the-century decorative trade book covers by some of the most noted designers of the time. Both exhibits demonstrate some of the many lines of inquiry that can be followed through the original printed sources preserved in Special Collections.\n\nSpecial Collections is located on the fourth floor of the Golda Meir Library and is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

SUMMARY:Maps & America: The Arthur Holzheimer Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Mapping Brazil from Within: Remote Sensing\, Collaboration\, and Counter-Cartographic Perspectives\nMaps & America: The Arthur Holzheimer Lecture Series returns on April 30 with speaker Dr. Julio Pedrassoli – associate professor at the University of São Paulo – for his presentation “Mapping Brazil from Within: Remote Sensing\, Collaboration\, and Counter-Cartographic Perspectives.” The event will open with a reception at 5:30 p.m.\, and the lecture will begin at 6 p.m. \nPedrassoli will discuss his work leading urban mapping with MapBiomas\, a Brazilian-founded initiative that uses cloud computing\, machine learning\, and decades of satellite imagery to produce large‑scale maps displaying changes in environmental variables over time. Pedrassoli will also analyze the societal impacts of organizing mapping through a collaborative network of academics\, NGOs\, tech companies\, and civil society. By considering maps that challenge dominant power structures\, the lecture examines how such an arrangement shapes data transparency\, methodological openness\, and the public circulation of territorial information\, particularly in deforestation\, land-use change\, climate governance\, and land conflicts. The Brazilian experience is situated as a reference model that has been replicated across South America and the tropical world as a source of innovation in cartography. \nPedrassoli is a remote sensing scientist and geographer with a PhD in Human Geography from the University of São Paulo. His research focuses on mapping urban expansion and housing–poverty dynamics in the Global South. A former research scholar at Columbia University\, he develops advanced methods for mapping informal settlements. \nHeld annually in the spring\, the Maps & America Lecture Series was inaugurated by noted cartographic historian\, Brian Harley\, in 1990. Since its inception\, the lecture series has been generously sponsored by the late Arthur Holzheimer and his wife Janet Holzheimer of the Chicago area. Over the years\, the series has featured many leading figures in the field of map history and provided a multifaceted survey of this rapidly developing field. The lecture series is free and open to the public. To learn more\, view the list of previous Maps & America lectures. \nRegistration has closed. Thank you to those who attended the event. \nBrazil\, Our Land: Map of Brazil\, special series\, political and regional published by Geomapas Editora de Mapas e Guias Ltda. in 1998.

SUMMARY:Academic Adventurers Fall 2026
DESCRIPTION:Academic Adventurers presents:\n \n“But I thought we were in Paris….”\n\n\n\n\n\nA presentation by Dr. Winifred Elysse Newman \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe use maps to locate places\, people\, and things\, but maps also use us to create stories\, project an idea\, or shape how we think. Maps\, mapmakers\, and map readers are in a dynamic relationship with more uncertainty than you know until you stop and ask\, where am I? This talk walks through how maps create a place in our mind or reinforce ideas about a place that may or may not be true. \n\n\n\n\n\n \nDr. Winifred Elysse Newman is Professor and Dean at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Her research promotes digital and human-machine hybrid solutions as a paradigm shift in the design and occupation of the built environment. Dr. Newman concentrates on spatial perception in architecture\, ecological psychology\, adaptive environments\, and neuroaesthetics\, with active research in neuroscience and architecture\, data visualization\, mapping\, STEM learning environments\, and histories of technology and science. Dr. Newman is the Executive Editor of the Journal for Technology\, Architecture\, and Design. Publications include Data Visualization for Design Thinking: Applied Mapping.

SUMMARY:You Are Here
DESCRIPTION:Stop by the American Geographical Society Library on the third floor in the east wing of the Golda Meir Library to explore its latest exhibit You Are Here. \nYou Are Here explores the unique relationship between regional and global transit maps and the socio-cultural identity of their subjects. Transit maps can be utilitarian\, functioning as navigational tools\, but they can also be aspirational\, signs of cities and nations attempting to shift perceptions of their identity. The individual maps in this exhibition serve as a window into the histories of the places they represent as well as the history of transit cartography as a whole. With a wider view\, the evolution of transit maps demonstrates how a transportation system can become synonymous with a city or nation’s identity\, reflecting its change over time\, spearheading cartographic innovations\, or reifying an entirely new vision for space and place. \nYou Are Here is on view until February 2027. The AGSL is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

SUMMARY:Morris Fromkin Memorial Lecture 2026
DESCRIPTION:Contested Sovereignties: Visions of Land and Housing Reform by Wisconsin Oneida Activist Laura Cornelius Kellogg\nThe UWM Libraries will host the 57th Annual Morris Fromkin Memorial Lecture on Thursday\, Oct. 8\, at 4 p.m. in the Fourth Floor Conference Center of the Golda Meir Library and via Zoom. UWM School of Architecture & Urban Planning Assistant Professor Maura Lucking will present “Contested Sovereignties: Visions of Land and Housing Reform by Wisconsin Oneida Activist Laura Cornelius Kellogg.” \nLucking will investigate Oneida activist Laura Cornelius Kellogg’s Lolomi plan\, a proposed urban development initiative based on Europe’s Garden City movement. The plan envisioned self-sustained and self-governed greenbelt villages that would support the expansion of the Six Nations Confederacy land base. Lucking will also describe how Kellogg’s Progressive Era ideals and controversial methods of raising capital shape the perception of Kellogg and the Lolomi plan today. The lecture will feature a response from Mark Freeland\, director of the UWM Electa Quinney Institute. \nThis event is free and open to the public. SUMMARY:LACUSL Speaker Series Presents Beto Torrens
DESCRIPTION:Bomba Bambulaé: A Community-Building Tool from Puerto Rico\nIn this presentation – which is part of the LACUSL (Latin American\, Caribbean\, and U.S. Latinx Studies) Speaker Series – Grammy Award-winning musician and UWM graduate student Beto Torrens will speak about his decades of cultural artistry working in the tradition of Puerto Rican Bomba. Bomba is Puerto Rico’s oldest living musical tradition: it was created by our enslaved African ancestors to create communities of support between the various ethnic groups that were forced to live together in the “hacienda’s” slave barracks. Because Bomba is a living language\, it is in a constant evolutionary process. \nBeto Torrens is a Grammy Award musician\, producer and educator from San Juan\, Puerto Rico. With a career that spans over 30 years professionally\, Beto’s main interest is in creating bridges between Afro-diasporic music and dance traditions from the Caribbean and the Americas. He is currently pursuing an MA in music here at UW-Milwaukee. \nThis event will take place on Oct. 22 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in the American Geographical Society Library on the third floor in the east wing of the Golda Meir Library.

SUMMARY:Searching for Beer Ghosts in Archives\, Cemeteries\, Fields\, and Forests: A Lecture Presented by Archives and Special Collections
DESCRIPTION:Water\, malt\, yeast\, and hops: these are essential ingredients of beer. Hops\, specifically\, play an outsized role in determining its flavor and aroma. \nIn her new book\, Beer Ghosts: In Search of Lost Hops and the Women Who Grew Them\, Jennifer Jordan takes us back to a brief but pivotal moment in the 19th century when Wisconsin produced much of the hops grown in the U.S. \nThose hops are not the only ghosts in Jordan’s story; haunting her book’s pages are the young women whose harvest work was key to the American beer industry’s rise. Jordan excavates archival materials and physical landscapes to investigate histories that may not always be immediately visible. \nJoin the Archives and Special Collections Department as they present this lecture by Professor Jennifer Jordan in the American Geographical Society Library on the third floor in the east wing of the Golda Meir Library on Oct. 29 from 3-4 p.m. \n\nJennifer Jordan is a professor of sociology\, urban studies\, and history at the University of Wisconsin\, Milwaukee. She is the author of Beer Ghosts: In Search of Lost Hops and the Women who Grew Them (University of Chicago Press\, 2026)\, Edible Memory: The Lure of Heirloom Tomatoes and other Forgotten Foods (University of Chicago Press\, 2015) and Structures of Memory: Understanding Urban Change in Berlin and Beyond (Stanford University Press\, 2006).

SUMMARY:LACUSL Speaker Series Presents Contemporary Political Trends
DESCRIPTION:Recent Latin American Elections: Left-Right Politics Today\nJoin the UWM Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies for a panel discussion on recent national elections across Latin America\, and emerging regional trends in left-right politics. Speakers María Fernanda Bozmoski (Atlantic Council) and Natasha Borges Sugiyama (UWM\, Political Science) will discuss examples from Brazil\, Colombia\, Costa Rica\, and Perú and consider what these can tell us about hemispheric trends\, prospects for U.S. diplomacy\, and the state of democracy. The discussion will be moderated by Samantha Hagle (UWM\, Political Science). \nMaría Fernanda Bozmoski is Lead for Central America and Director of Impact and Operations at the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center\, where she leads the center’s work on Mexico and Central America and supports the director with the center’s operations. During her time at the Atlantic Council\, she has co-led the center’s Northern Triangle Task Force\, helped shape the center’s trade work\, and scheduled events in Asia for US policymakers. Bozmoski is a frequent commentator in several U.S. and regional outlets; originally from Costa Rica\, Bozmoski holds a BA in European studies (Sorbonne University\, France)\, an MA in Latin American studies and political economy (Georgetown University School of Foreign Service) and an MA in international law and human rights (United Nations University for Peace). \nNatasha Borges Sugiyama is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at UW-Milwaukee. Her research interests lie in Brazilian politics\, policy diffusion\, social sector reform\, comparative public policy\, and gender and politics. Here at UWM she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in these areas; she holds a PhD in Government and a Master’s in Public Affairs from the University of Texas at Austin\, as well as a BA from Oberlin College. \nSamantha Hagle holds a PhD in Political Science from our very own UWM and is now Teaching Faculty in the same department. Her primary areas of specialization are comparative politics\, international relations\, human rights\, and ethnic studies. Her current research focuses on the political rights of Indigenous populations in Latin America\, and Indigenous rights in comparative political contexts more broadly. This work aims to bring previously marginalized perspectives to our political frameworks and explores the political implications and factors of minority inclusion in domestic laws. \nPart of the LACUSL Speaker Series\, this event will take place on Nov. 19 from 2:30-3:45 p.m. in the American Geographical Society Library on the third floor in the east wing of the Golda Meir Library.
