Hartford Ave., Milwaukee.

Bassett and two undergraduate research assistants, Steph Fones and Audrey Creary-De La Cruz, travelled to the Oglala Lakota Nation at Pine Ridge Reservation to meet with Tribal President Frank Star Comes Out about a book of historical plat maps of Pine Ridge. Bassett and two colleagues from South Dakota State University, Drs. Dale Potts and Weiwei Zhang, have been working with the 1936 plat maps since 2019, georeferencing the 140 maps and cross-referencing them with information obtained from the South Dakota State Archives, NARA rolls, and county Records of Deeds offices.

In early January, Bassett, Fones, and Creary-De La Cruz met with Star Comes Out and a few of his cabinet to relay early findings, and were invited to share the findings with the Oglala Tribal Council in early February.

This presentation will offer some of their findings as well as narratives from students’ perspectives on learning research methods through Indigenous methodological lenses.
