Belonging
CASE is a collective effort to educate, connect resources, and develop programming that advocates for all students, ourselves, and each other in order to impact change at structural, institutional, and systemic levels.
The members of CASE include the First-Generation+ Resource Center (FG+RC), the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Plus Resource Center (LGBTQ+ RC), Military and Veteran’s Resource Center (MAVRC), and the Women’s Resources Center (WRC). Each of these Centers serve students by creating spaces, programs and resources that support each student’s journey through UWM.
The Multicultural Centers, including the American Indian Student Center (AISC), Black Student Cultural Center (BSCC), Roberto Hernández Center (RHC), and the Southeast Asian American Student Center (SEAASC), are offices on campus that promote belonging, academic success, and student support for students who belong to communities across race, ethnicity, and culture. The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion also has other programs, which you can learn about here.
- PROUD Panthers is an LGBTQIA+ focused organization that students in the residence halls can join.
- Kaleidoscope Living Learning Community (LLC) is to help residential students build connections with peers and feel a sense of belonging at UWM.
- Inclusive Housing offers an inviting, welcoming space for students who self-select and self-identify as gender non-conforming or who have other cultural or identity considerations related to living in the residence halls, along with students who identify as allies.
Health and Wellness
The Student Health and Wellness Center (SHAW) is located in the Northwest Quad-D building on the 7th and 8th Floors, with Medical Services and University Counseling Services. Along with hosting a variety of holistic wellness programs, services, and resources, SHAW also provides a variety of trans-inclusive services, such as hormone therapy on an informed consent basis, LGBTQIA+ group therapy sessions, and community referrals for ongoing care.
The UWM Speech and Language Clinic provides low cost voice therapy for transgender clients seeking support in finding their authentic voice. Clinical treatments start at the beginning of the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters. There are limited spots each semester. Click here for more information, or call them at (414) 229-4351.
Academic Support
UWM is the only campus in the state of Wisconsin with an LGBT Studies Program that offers its own courses. Our program attracts hundreds of students who wish to explore sexual orientation and gender identity in depth. The program is interdisciplinary, and over a dozen affiliated departments have offered classes. Students can complete a Certificate in LGBT Studies to indicate to future employers their expertise in working with LGBT populations in social services, business, health care, public affairs, and other careers.
The UWM Libraries house the largest collection of LGBT historical and contemporary materials in Wisconsin, providing a rich record of Milwaukee’s LGBT movement that is accessible to students, faculty, and the general public. The collection provides a window into the personal struggles and triumphs of individuals within the various LGBT communities.
