The Wound

November 10, 2017 @ 9:00 PM - 10:30 PM

32nd Annual Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival presents…

directed by John Trengove
written by John Trengove, Thando Mgqolozana and Malusi Bengu
(South Africa, in Xhosa with English subtitles, 88min. 2017)

THE WOUND centers on a coming-of-age ritual in Xhosa culture, wherein young men are circumcised and then sequestered in the woods of South Africa until they reach manhood. Each year Xolani — a stunning performance from out gay musician Nakhane Touré — volunteers to mentor the men as they heal from their wounds—an excuse he uses to reignite his private affair with another mentor, Vija.

At the film’s outset, Xolani is placed in charge of Kwanda, a young man from Johannesburg who is routinely ridiculed for his softness and effeminacy. Immediately recognizing Kwanda as gay, Xolani attempts to protect him from the other men undergoing the ritual. Eventually Xolani’s actions risk exposing the forbidden relationship between him and Vija.

As an outsider from Xhosa culture, director John Trengove avoids speaking for his characters or their cultural traditions, instead opting for a more distant and observational narrative approach. His film explores, with remarkable nuance, the fractured masculinity of its lead characters and their attempts to reconcile desire with tradition.

“Mr. Trengove shoots the film in intimate wide-screen, getting in close to the characters as they tamp down explosive feelings, often letting the spectacular landscapes break down into soft-focus abstractions.” – New York Times
— Jacob Daniel Carter
