THE LAVENDER SCARE
November 8, 2018 @ 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
The Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival and the Jewish Museum Milwaukee Presents…
THE LAVENDER SCARE
(Josh Howard, USA, English, 77min, DCP, 2017)
With the United States gripped in the panic of the 1950s Cold War, President Dwight D. Eisenhower deems homosexuals to be “security risks” and vows to rid the federal government of all employees discovered to be gay or lesbian. Tens of thousands lose their jobs.
But the mass firings have an unintended effect: they stir outrage in the gay and lesbian community and thrust an unlikely hero into the forefront of the LGBTQ rights movement.
In addition to illuminating a little-known chapter of American history, the documentary THE LAVENDER SCARE is a timely reminder of the value of vigilance and social action when civil liberties are under attack.
This screening is presented in conjunction with JEWISH MUSEUM MILWAUKEE’s currently ongoing exhibition BLACKLIST: THE HOLLYWOOD RED SCARE ( running thorough February 10) and in anticipation of the Museum’s hosting of historian DAVID K. JOHNSON on Thursday, January 17 at 7:30pm. Johnson, whose book serves as a foundation for tonight’s film, will present a talk entitled “The Lavender Scare: The Cold War Persecution of Gays and Lesbians in the Federal Government.”
