What if “the one that got away” suddenly returned?
Passions re-ignite and hidden secrets are revealed when, Dean, a graphic designer in Los Angeles, gets an email, out of the blue, from Alex, an ex-lover he hasn’t seen or heard from in 15 years. The two decide to reconnect and, over the course of a weekend at a vacation house in the desert, they must determine whether or not they have a future together. A film about roads not taken, unfinished business — and the struggle to adjust to progressive lenses.
The film, to our eyes, is singular in its achievement: an adult, reflective gauging of middle-aged gay male life that is also witty, honest — and beautifully acted and filmed. The movie is so artfully structured, or that is to say, the weekend passes so convincingly: we get to inhabit the time Dean and Alex spend together, their history felt, their futures, possibly, open to possibility. The movie is so generous to its viewers: always engaging and never pandering, and never shedding the ache of romance.
Written and directed by TIM KIRKMAN, Emmy, Gotham, GLAAD and Independent Spirit Award-nominee. The Festival has been fortunate to have been able to share 2 films from Tim Kirkman before: the memoir/documentary DEAR JESSE which mapped what it meant to be a gay men in a state that had Jesse Helms as its Senator, and the moving drama LOGGERHEADS about one man dealing with AIDS while his family’s faith clouds their ability to accept him.
