I Dream in Another Language
November 4, 2017 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
32nd Annual Milwaukee LGBT Film/Video Festival presents…
I DREAM IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE
(Sueño en Otra Idioma)
directed by Ernesto Contreras
Mexico/The Netherlands, in Spanish with English subtitles, 101min., 2017
An indigenous language is in peril as its last two speakers — Evaristo and Isauro, now both in their 70’s — haven’t spoken to each other in over 50 years. The two had a quarrel, of unknown and seemingly unresovable origin, and, depsite their proximity, won’t talk to the other.
Martín, a young linguist, undertakes the challenge of bringing the two men back together to convince them to once again speak in the language he is desperate to preserve. However, hidden in the older men’s past, a strenuously suppressed secret burns, thwarting Martín’s efforts to resuscitate a language, while haunting Evaristo and Isauro, with increasing disruption.
A movie aswoon to the enchantments of the jungle and comfortably fantastical in its embrace of languages that can cross worlds, I DREAM IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE, stirred by a love that cannot speak its name, believes in the unbeknownst agencies of languages and all of the risk they can harbor.
