directed by Carlo Lavagna
In Italian with English subtitles, 84min., 2015
Arianna was born three times: once at the beginning of her life, again a few years later as a little girl, and once more at age 19. Director Carlo Lavagna’s first feature tells the story of a young woman who, as she becomes more aware of her body and sexuality, also works to author her life in a way that conforms to her sense of self, and not the identity as chosen by her parents and her doctors.
Arianna — played by Ondina Quadri — spends a great deal of time comparing herself to other girls her age. And, one summe, after telling her parents to leave her behind at her childhood lake house to study, she pursues a more thorough investigation into herself. She gauges her body, explores sex, and even investigates her medical records — all to resolve any mysteries she feels about herself.
ARIANNA is a resonant tale of coming-of-age — gradually and eventually. A gentle and necessarily introspective look at the subject of intersexuality and one person’s struggle to overcome their emotional isolation to forge a sense of self true to the identity that she understands herself to have.

Winner, Special Mention, JURY AWARD, Wicked Queer, Boston’s LGBT Film Festival: “In a field of many strong film entrants, the jury awarded an Honorable Mention to Italian entrant ARIANNA, co-written and directed by Carlo Lavagna, on the strength of the film’s rarely-seen content. The superb acting by Ondina Quadri as the titular character and spellbinding script by Lavagna, Barzine, and Salsa allowed the audience to understand the painful struggle of self-awareness elevating this film above and beyond the standard ‘coming of age’ narrative.”
