To help overcome some of those barriers, select students are invited to enroll in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/first-year-bridge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">First Year Bridge program<\/a>, a transitional program that provides extra support in math, English, and other skills during a student\u2019s first two semesters of college.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First Year Bridge (FYB)&nbsp;was originally housed at&nbsp;UW-Waukesha, but with the closure of Waukesha\u2019s campus in 2025, FYB moved to UWM\u2019s College of Letters &amp; Science. Now,&nbsp;as their first year in their new homes draws to a close, FYB Director Angie Izard says the change has&nbsp;opened up&nbsp;new opportunities for her students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am excited about our new home&nbsp;at&nbsp;the Milwaukee campus, because there are so many resources here,\u201d Izard said. \u201cFolks have been so welcoming to First Year Bridge.&nbsp;They\u2019ve&nbsp;extended themselves and really gone out of their way to let us know that they want us to be part of the College and that&nbsp;they\u2019re&nbsp;willing to support and&nbsp;assist&nbsp;us.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-extra-support-nbsp\"><strong>Extra support<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are selected for the First Year Bridge program based on their high school GPAs and a pattern of struggling in English or math.\u00a0There are\u00a0about\u00a0400 students in every cohort,\u00a0said\u00a0Izard.\u00a0Most are from Milwaukee, but the program has also welcomed students from as far away as New Jersey and California.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left uwm-c-img--caption-gray\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"257\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/255\/2026\/05\/Angie-Izard-1-257x300.webp\" alt=\"A headshot of a Black woman wearing glasses and a black head scarf.\" class=\"wp-image-31399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/255\/2026\/05\/Angie-Izard-1-257x300.webp 257w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/255\/2026\/05\/Angie-Izard-1.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 257px) 100vw, 257px\" \/><figcaption>Angie Izard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>FYB students still take their general education courses with the rest of the first-year class, but they\u00a0also attend math and English support courses that\u00a0provide<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>additional\u00a0academic\u00a0assistance.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The students also meet with mentors and a success coach who help them develop college skills, such as making study plans, managing time, managing test anxiety, and learning about campus resources, like the Financial Aid Office or the Writing Center.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c(A lot) are first-generation students who don\u2019t have a lot of foundational experience with being a college student,\u201d&nbsp;said Derrick&nbsp;Langston. \u201cBased on where they were previously,&nbsp;there\u2019s&nbsp;only so much information they can get about what college&nbsp;life is like. A lot of students are learning about college while&nbsp;they\u2019re&nbsp;moving through it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Langston is a&nbsp;First Year Bridge success coach and retention specialist&nbsp;who joined the program&nbsp;this year. He&nbsp;doesn\u2019t&nbsp;have the institutional memory to compare First Year Bridge at Waukesha versus at UWM, but he knows that being in UWM\u2019s College of Letters &amp; Science makes things easier for the students he works with.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, he said,&nbsp;\u201cA lot of (general education) requirements&nbsp;are fulfilled within L&amp;S, so&nbsp;there\u2019s&nbsp;a great sense&nbsp;of relational support we can offer to one another. And&nbsp;there\u2019s&nbsp;also a lot of familiarity among faculty, staff, and other teaching assistants. Us being housed here, functionally speaking, is&nbsp;really helpful.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading size-h4\" id=\"h-the-definition-of-success-nbsp\"><strong>The definition of success<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Transitioning from UW-Waukesha to the College of Letters &amp; Science was challenging, but Izard and her staff were deliberate and mindful about the changes to be made and the pillars of success to be retained. We know that Bridge is a good thing. We share success stories about students who really benefited\u00a0greatly from\u00a0the program. Now I want to create more stories,\u201d said Izard.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite&nbsp;support, only about 52% of FYB students continue past their first two semesters of college. Their challenges are not just academic; many face affordability, social, or family challenges. For Langston, those statistics&nbsp;go beyond&nbsp;numbers \u2013 they are students that he knows personally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI create and&nbsp;maintain&nbsp;a rapport&nbsp;with these students.&nbsp;That personal element is really important to me,\u201d he said.&nbsp;He plans to use those relationships to help students get the support they need to&nbsp;continue on&nbsp;their college journeys as he keeps working with the program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeing students succeed on that journey is one of the best parts of Izard\u2019s job.\u00a0She\u00a0loves\u00a0when her students\u00a0come back to visit\u00a0and report their triumphs; many say that FYB helped them start their college careers on the right track.
