Mendez has a long history with the publication and was one of the newsroom\u2019s founding reporters. He won a Regional Edward R. Murrow Award in 2018 and multiple Milwaukee Press Club honors between 2015-21.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chris Fons (\u201987, BA; \u201995, MA History)) <\/strong>was recently elected to the school board of Milwaukee Public Schools, where he will draw on his background in teaching and education to advocate for public schools as an equalizing force in the community. Fons is also the co-founder of Riverwest 24, a 24-hour bike race in Milwaukee\u2019s Riverwest neighborhood. He was recently profiled in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/2025\/08\/12\/meet-chris-fons-mps-board-member-who-co-founded-riverwest-24\/85314936007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/em><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Elizabeth Brzeski (\u201802, BA History and Religious Studies) <\/strong>was named the Chief Operating Officer of <a href=\"https:\/\/biztimes.com\/saint-johns-on-the-lake-names-new-president-and-ceo-coo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">St. John\u2019s on the Lake<\/a>, a luxury senior living community, in August. Brzeski was most recently the vice president of specialty service for Agrace in Fitchburg, Wisconsin.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dennis McBride (\u201876, BA Journalism) <\/strong>is the author of a new book, <em>A City on the Edge: Pandemic, Protest and&nbsp; Polarization. <\/em>The book details his time as the newly-elected mayor of Wauwatosa in 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter protests. McBride spoke about his book on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wortfm.org\/mayor-dennis-mcbride-a-city-on-the-edge-pandemic-protest-and-polarization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WORT Radio<\/a> in September.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tammy Gilpin-Ripp (93, BA Mass Communication) <\/strong>served as a stage manager at the 40th anniversary Printers Row Lit Fest in Chicago. In her role she greeted authors, moderators and audience members as well as presented an overview of the festival, highlighted\/thanked sponsors, encouraged festival-supporting donations, shared program participant bios and book purchase opportunities, and kept the program running on time for stage transitions.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laurels-amp-accolades-nbsp\"><strong>Laurels &amp; Accolades<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Associate Professor <strong>Peter Sands (English)<\/strong> has been elected to the Council on Honors Education Executive Board for a three-year term. COHE is the advocacy, policy, and leadership organization for Honors colleges and programs at APLU-member institutions. Sands has also been reappointed to the Professional Development Committee of the National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <strong>Mike Allen (Communication)<\/strong> will be awarded the <a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/31tghk\/7cdipci\/fz76kz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">National Communication Association Mark L. Knapp Award in Interpersonal Communication<\/a> at the annual convention in November. This award, one of the organization\u2019s most prestigious, recognizes career contributions to the study of interpersonal communication and individuals who have made significant scholarly contributions to the study of interaction and\/or relational processes. The recipient will also have contributed to the quality of interpersonal communication through active involvement in the discipline, significant mentoring of students, and\/or public service focused on interpersonal communication.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Assistant Professor<strong> Lia Medeiros (Physics)<\/strong> contributed to the collection of new, detailed images of a super-massive black hole which reveal a dynamic environment with unexpected changing polarization patterns. The images were captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) Collaboration, and the images are <a href=\"https:\/\/eventhorizontelescope.org\/new-eht-images-reveal-unexpected-polarization-flips-at-m87\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">available for viewing online.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students in UWM\u2019s <strong>Chinese Program <\/strong>connected with Brookfield East High School on Sept. 24 as part of the program\u2019s ongoing commitment to community outreach and cultural exchange. During the visit, UWM students delivered a presentation titled, \u201cTasty, Techy, and Green: Exploring China with UWM Students.\u201d Senior Teaching Faculty Lu Yin opened the session with an introduction to UWM and the Chinese Program. The series features regular readings of renowned local or regional poets.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After UnitedHealthcare and Ascension Wisconsin announced that the insurer may drop the healthcare provider from its network, Distinguished Professor <strong>John Heywood (Economics) <\/strong>explained the contract negotiations at play for <a href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/nc\/mountain\/news\/2025\/09\/12\/ascension-wisconsin-and-unitedhealthcare-under-negotiations-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spectrum 1 News<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As further details about the UnitedHealthcare and Ascension Wisconsin insurance dispute became clearer, Professor <strong>Scott Adams (Economics) <\/strong>explained on <a href=\"https:\/\/wtmj.com\/news\/2025\/09\/30\/ascension-wisconsin-unitedhealthcare-contract-set-to-expire-what-it-means-for-patients\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WTMJ Radio<\/a> how there are fewer large hospital groups in Wisconsin than in the past and how that impacts people buying health insurance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How cool are the windows of UWM\u2019s new <strong>Chemistry Building<\/strong>? But that strategy can backfire, undergraduate <strong>Ian Dugenske (English and Film Studies) <\/strong>warned in the <a href=\"https:\/\/badgerherald.com\/film\/2025\/09\/17\/hollywoods-revival-reboot-repeat-playbook-leaves-much-to-be-desired\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Badger Herald<\/em><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alumna <strong>Rebekah Beaulieu (\u201806, MA Art History) <\/strong>was profiled on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aam-us.org\/2025\/09\/26\/the-four-day-workweek-a-qa-with-taft-museum-of-art-ceo-becky-beaulieu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">American Alliance of Public Museum\u2019s<\/a> website as she discussed her work as the CEO of the Taft Museum of Art in Cincinatti.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Milwaukee hosted <a href=\"https:\/\/shepherdexpress.com\/culture\/milwaukee-history\/qwertyfest-celebrates-a-great-milwaukee-invention-the-typewr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">QWERTYFEST<\/a>, a three-day celebration of the typewriter, in early October. The occasion was marked with several events, including talk hosted by Associate Dean of the Humanities <strong>Jason Puskar (English) <\/strong>and UWM alum <strong>Bobby Tanzilo (\u201889, BA Mass Communication)<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Commweal Magazine<\/em> gave a short analysis and review of Professor emeritus <strong>John Koethe\u2019s (English) <\/strong>latest volume of poetry, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commonwealmagazine.org\/li-yiyun-Koethe-september-booknotes-domestico\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Centuries and Galaxies<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>in September.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir4project.org\/news\/citrusgreeningbiologicals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">U.S. Department of Agriculture<\/a> is funding research to combat diseases that impact the country\u2019s citrus crops. The USDA recently reported on success by Distinguished Professor <strong>Ching-Hong Yang (Biological Sciences) <\/strong>in developing a compound known as Reju Agro that has shown immense promise in treating citrus crop diseases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New fossil evidence discovered by Visiting Assistant Professor <strong>Erik Gulbranson <\/strong>and Distinguished Professor <strong>John Isbell (both Geosciences) <\/strong>suggests that Antartica used to be covered by lush forests before dinosaurs ever walked the Earth. He spent his full life marveling at the beauty of the natural world and sharing that wonder with his students and community.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bob joined the UW-Milwaukee faculty as a professor of physics in 1962. He helped to found and shepherd the university\u2019s Laboratory for Surface Studies and was a co-founder of Letters &amp; Science\u2019s popular \u201cScience Bag\u201d series. Beyond the university, Bob was involved in his field, serving in various offices in the Optical Society of America, the American Institute of Physics, and the Council of Scientific Society Presidents. He also authored several books.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bob left lasting legacies at UW-Milwaukee.
