At this year\u2019s symposium on April &hellip; <\/div><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<hr class=\"has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"size-p-md\"><strong>Please be aware that some publications require a subscription in order to view articles, and most links below leave this site.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-alumni-accomplishments-nbsp\">Alumni Accomplishments&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pakou Vang (\u201803, MA Communication)&nbsp;<\/strong>was named the president of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.normandale.edu\/news\/2026\/04\/Pakou%20Yang%20Named%20President%20of%20Normandale%20Community%20College.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Normandale Community College<\/a>&nbsp;in Minnesota&nbsp;by the Board of Trustees of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. Her appointment makes her the&nbsp;first&nbsp;Hmong-American&nbsp;college or university president in the United States. Vang&nbsp;has served as Normandale\u2019s interim president for the past 10 months and holds a PhD from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, as well as an extensive background in higher education.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Soham Patel (\u201818, PhD English)&nbsp;<\/strong>published their most recent work, a multi-genre collection&nbsp;titled&nbsp;<em>The Daughter Industry,&nbsp;<\/em>in April.&nbsp;The book examines the social and economic dynamics of gender through the lens of sex-selective elimination in Southeast Asia. They and their work were featured on the <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/electricliterature.com\/reviving-the-unborn-ghosts-lost-to-sex-selection\/\" target=\"_blank\">Electric Literature website<\/a><\/span>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hunter Turpin (\u201823, BA Urban Studies and Journalism,&nbsp;Advertising, &amp;&nbsp;Media Studies)&nbsp;<\/strong>has a new beat at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/talkingbiznews.com\/media-news\/biztimes-milwaukee-reporter-turpin-moves-to-new-beat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>BizTimes&nbsp;Milwaukee<\/em><\/a>. Turpin, who has worked for the publication&nbsp;since 2023, covering real estate, will now be&nbsp;writing&nbsp;stories examining nonprofits, education, and health care.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The&nbsp;<em>Encyclopedia of Rock and Roll 1944-1964&nbsp;<\/em>by&nbsp;<strong>David&nbsp;Luhrssen&nbsp;(\u201891, MA History)<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>Michael Larson (\u201889, BS Political Science)<\/strong>&nbsp;was published in April by Bloomsbury Academic. This is the duo\u2019s third encyclopedia exploring 20th-century American popular music for Bloomsbury.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-laurels-amp-accolades-nbsp\">Laurels &amp; Accolades&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Associate Professor&nbsp;<strong>Susana Antunes (Portuguese)&nbsp;<\/strong>is the co-editor of a new collection of essays and papers titled&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Sentient-Books-Impact-Creation-Universalia\/dp\/B0GCVM1NZ4\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Sentient Books: AI\u2019s Impact on Creation<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em><\/span><em>&nbsp;<\/em>The book explores human creativity and authorship in an age where an algorithm can produce a symphony or a work of art.&nbsp;How do artists create their work when artificial intelligence can be both a collaborator and a threat?&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Professor emerita&nbsp;<strong>Kimberly Blaeser\u2019s (English)&nbsp;<\/strong>short&nbsp;story \u201cWaiting, a Quintet\u201d was chosen for an O. Henry Prize, recognizing it as among the best short stories&nbsp;of the year. Her work was published in&nbsp;<em>The Best Short Stories 2026<\/em>&nbsp;(ed. Tommy Orange) with other O. Henry Prize Winners. Blaeser\u2019s story is available for reading on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lithub.com\/waiting-a-quintet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Literary Hub<\/a>.&nbsp;Her book&nbsp;<em>Ancient Light&nbsp;<\/em>(2004), a collection of poetry, was recognized as a 2026 National Book Foundation Science + Literature selected title, which comes with a $10,000 cash prize.&nbsp;Blaeser was recognized for her achievement at the Madison Central Library in April.&nbsp;Blaeser and her book&nbsp;were recently featured in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/captimes.com\/entertainment\/books\/award-winning-poet-kimberly-blaeser-language-has-always-inhabited-me\/article_70eff838-f654-41aa-a71e-bd2e8718eea4.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Cap Times<\/em><\/a>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Graduate student&nbsp;<strong>Sophie Nunberg\u2019s (English)<\/strong>&nbsp;creative nonfiction piece, \u201cThis is Just to Say I Have Recommended the Last Book You Were Saving,\u201d won an AWP&nbsp;Intro Journals Award in prose&nbsp;(AWP stands for Association of Writers &amp; Writing Programs). It will appear in an upcoming issue of&nbsp;<em>Mid-American Review.&nbsp;<\/em>These are&nbsp;prestigious awards for graduate students; eight UWM creative writing students have won AWP Intro honors in the last twenty years, a record bested only by the University of Utah and Purdue.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Genevieve Dwyer (Chinese;&nbsp;\u201822, BA Psychology), Preston Ruh&nbsp;(\u201825, BA Linguistics), Isabelle&nbsp;Bright&nbsp;&nbsp;(Linguistics),&nbsp;<\/strong>and students from the UWM&nbsp;<strong>Chinese calligraphy class&nbsp;<\/strong>had some of their student work selected for inclusion in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.aaiceusa.com\/2025-grades-college-level\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025 National Chinese EXPO of Student Works<\/a>. This achievement highlights the UWM Chinese Program\u2019s impact on students\u2019 academic growth, community engagement, and career exploration. Their work was&nbsp;completed under the guidance of Senior Teaching Faculty&nbsp;<strong>Lu Yin (Chinese)<\/strong>. UWM was also honored with a trophy recognizing these national achievements.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At this year&#8217;s Undergraduate Research Symposium, Professor <strong>Alexander (Leggy) Arnold (Chemistry and Biochemistry) <\/strong>received the Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year Award.
