Schoenemann was previously the assistant administrator in the city of Mequon, Wisconsin. In his new role, he will oversee the city\u2019s municipal services and departments, execute the city\u2019s budget, and advise members of the Common Council on issues facing Portage.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Jerondah McCray (\u201815, BA Political Science, \u201817, MS Community Engagement)<\/strong> was featured in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/money\/real-estate\/commercial\/2025\/07\/14\/her-events-business-is-redeveloping-a-milwaukee-site-into-a-venue\/84333951007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>for the expansion of her events business, which purchased and is renovating a warehouse that will become a new event venue. McCray, who was formerly incarcerated for wire fraud, rebuilt her life after she was released from prison with the help of her community and now runs a successful business with her family.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Matt Dorner <\/strong><strong>(\u201808, MA Urban Planning and Master of Public Administration) <\/strong>was promoted to CEO of Milwaukee Downtown, BID #21 in July. He previously served as the Business Improvement District\u2019s economic development officer. He will oversee business development and facilitate the district\u2019s events, which include Downtown Dining Week, the Holiday Lights Festival, the Ornament Trail and Downtown Employee Appreciation Week, as well as help shepherd its initiatives, including the Downtown Ambassadors, a Clean Sweep crew and a public art and mural program. His appointment was announced in January in <a href=\"https:\/\/urbanmilwaukee.com\/2025\/01\/09\/matt-dorner-named-head-of-milwaukee-downtown-weirick-stepping-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Urban Milwaukee<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>and he was profiled after stepping into the role in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/milwaukee\/news\/2025\/07\/28\/matt-dorner-milwaukee-downtown-bid-21-ceo.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Milwaukee Business Journal<\/em><\/a><em>.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tom Noonan (\u201895, BS Political Science) <\/strong>was appointed the new principal of St. Joseph Catholic School in Bradenton, Florida, by Bishop Frank J. Dewane in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thefloridacatholic.org\/dioceses\/venice\/bishop-dewane-names-new-principals-in-venice-bradenton\/article_c01ef571-ae61-40d1-bfe1-e2a5b3d0292e.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Diocese of Venice<\/a>, Florida. Fulbright IEA Awards are part of the Fulbright Scholar Program. These prestigious fellowships offer higher education administrators unique professional development opportunities to engage with the host country while playing a critical role in U.S. public diplomacy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <strong>Jason Puskar (English)<\/strong> was recently awarded the 2025 Lewis Mumford Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the History of Technics by the Media Ecology Association for his book, <em>The Switch: An Off and On History of Digital Humans<\/em>. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/z278bk\/7cdipci\/b09p8y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Mumford Award<\/a> recognizes recent scholarship in the history or philosophy of science and technology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <strong>Tanya Tiffany (Art History)<\/strong> has been awarded a research grant from the Hispanex program, which is sponsored by Spain&#8217;s Ministerio de Cultura. She will also be a visiting scholar at CY Cergy Paris Universit\u00e9 (CY Advanced Studies) in late fall 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-the-media-and-around-the-community-nbsp\"><strong>In the Media and around the Community<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <strong>Jeffrey Sommers (African &amp; African Diaspora Studies and Global Studies) <\/strong>defended Milwaukee against detractors in an opinion piece published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/opinion\/2025\/07\/21\/milwaukee-reckless-driving-crime\/85197216007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/em><\/a>. He also published the article \u201cEscape to Vatra Dornei\u201d in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.counterpunch.org\/2025\/07\/17\/escape-to-vatra-dornei\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>CounterPunch<\/em><\/a>. Finally, he penned an article for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.socialeurope.eu\/housing-crisis-threatens-to-fracture-central-and-eastern-europe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Social Europe<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>that explored the housing crisis in eastern and central Europe. <em>Social Europe <\/em>is the EU\u2019s top outlet for social democratic policy. It routinely publishes Nobel Laureates, heads of government, and star academics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the scientists who presented the world with the first image of a black hole in 2019 is now a faculty member at UW-Milwaukee. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/2025\/07\/23\/renowned-physicist-finds-collegiality-public-outreach-uw-milwaukee\/84525556007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>profiled Assistant Professor <strong>Lia Medeiros (Physics)<\/strong> and highlighted her exceptional work in astronomical research. Assistant Professor <strong>Victoria McCoy (Geosciences) <\/strong>made the case that the creature had a backbone and talked about her assertion in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discovermagazine.com\/the-sciences\/the-bizarre-300-million-year-old-tully-monster-why-the-fossil-still-confuses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Discover Magazine<\/em><\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Moons are objects of mystery and myth. Director <strong>Jean Creighton (Planetarium) <\/strong>spoke about the UWM Planetarium\u2019s recent program about the moons of the solar system on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuwm.com\/environment\/2025-07-10\/manfred-olson-planetarium-looks-beyond-our-lunar-neighbor-in-moons-myths-show\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WUWM Radio\u2019s Lake Effect show<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trade publication <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wattagnet.com\/broilers-turkeys\/animal-welfare\/article\/15750637\/cortisol-and-the-unknowns-of-stress-responses-in-poultry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WattPoultry<\/a> reported on research presented by Professor emeritus <strong>Colin Scanes (Biological Sciences) <\/strong>that suggests that poultry may produce cortisol, a hormone associated with stress in humans. The information is important to understand handling stress in agricultural flocks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.milwaukeemag.com\/meet-wisconsins-newest-poet-laureate-brenda-cardenas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Milwaukee Magazine<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>explored the work of Professor emerita <strong>Brenda <\/strong><strong>C\u00e1rdenas (English) <\/strong>in her current role as the Wisconsin Poet Laureate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2025-07-period-radio-transient.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Phys.org<\/a> reported on the discovery of a new long-period radio transient in space.
