Schwarz has long worked in libraries, including at the Oak Creek Library in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, and the Mount Mercy University Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Olivia McCurdy (\u201825, BA Digitial Arts &amp; Culture and Journalism, Advertising, and Media Studies) <\/strong>was named the 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pr.com\/press-release\/940688\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Omicron Delta Kappa<\/a> National Leader of the Year for Communications. The award recognizes up to six outstanding undergraduate leaders each year, and is the highest honor presented to the society\u2019s undergraduate members.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Felice Green (\u201889, BA Mass Communication\/Journalism) <\/strong>was named among Milwaukee\u2019s Notable Nonprofit Board Leaders by <a href=\"https:\/\/biztimes.com\/notable-nonprofit-board-leaders-felice-green\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">BizTimes<\/a>. Green serves on several nonprofit boards in the city, including the Sherman Park Community Association Board. In addition, Green was promoted to Senior Director of Programming at Milwaukee Water Commons. In her role, she works to connect, collaborate, and build broad community leadership on behalf of the region&#8217;s common waters throughout the Milwaukee Watershed. She manages and oversees the organization&#8217;s green infrastructure initiatives, including the expansion of tree planting in Milwaukee&#8217;s Sherman Park, water safety at local beaches, and the incorporation of art through the lens of water in programming to develop strong community partnerships and collaborations. She works at the intersections of environmental justice and public health to support the betterment of marginalized and underserved neighborhoods and communities at the grassroots level, creating authentic community engagement opportunities that empower and uplift residents, neighbors, supporters, and community members.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Leanne Trapedo Simms (\u201891, MA English) <\/strong>received tenure and was promoted to associate professor at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.knox.edu\/news\/knox-college-announces-its-four-newest-tenured-associate-professors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Knox College<\/a> in Galesburg, Illinois. She is the chair of the Peace and Justice Studies program and created a prison education program through which Knox faculty teach courses at Henry Hill Correctional Center.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Katelynn Dennis (\u201815, Master of Human Resources &amp; Labor Relations) <\/strong>was appointed the new director of human resources for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chattanoogan.com\/2025\/6\/7\/504687\/Katelyn-Dennis-Named-Walker-Charleston.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wacker-Charleston<\/a>, a Tennessee-based manufacturer of photovoltaic components. Dennis was previously a senior human resources manager at the Columbus McKinnon Corporation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Savannah Horstman (&#8217;24, BS Biological Sciences)&nbsp;<\/strong>won the &#8220;Evening Wear&#8221; category of the preliminary rounds of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheboygansun.com\/news\/miss-wisconsin-competition-announces-1st-round-of-preliminary-winners\/article_e45272b7-5d78-468a-83a8-2864fffd4b09.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2025 Miss Wisconsin Competition<\/a>. Her victory garnered her a $250 scholarship. Horstman previously won the title of Miss La Crosse\/Oktoberfest.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Amy Gorski (&#8217;12, BA Communication)\u00a0<\/strong>opened Poppy Bakery in June. Located in the former Sip &amp; Purr Cat Cafe, Poppy Bakery is a small-batch bakery that uses local ingredients. Combined with previous grants, his federal research funding has now exceeded $3.9 million.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <strong>Leslie Harris (Communication)<\/strong> has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Research in the Humanities Award. Presented by the UWM Office of Research, this award recognizes outstanding scholarship and research in the humanities within the past two years. Harris has demonstrated a comprehensive grasp of the subject of inquiry. He has made substantive contributions to humanistic thought through her publication entitled <em>The Rhetoric of White Slavery and the Making of National Identity.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Media Ecology Association recently awarded the 2025 Lewis Mumford Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the History of Technics to Professor <strong>Jason Puskar\u2019s (English) <\/strong>book <em>The Switch: An Off and On History of Digital Humans <\/em>(Minnesota, 2023). The Mumford Award recognizes recent scholarship in the history of philosophy of science and technology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Associate Professor&nbsp;<strong>Jennifer Gutzman (Biological Sciences)&nbsp;<\/strong>was recognized as a 2025 Notable Leader in STEM by <a href=\"https:\/\/nam02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fbiztimes.com%2Fnotable-leaders-in-stem-jennifer-gutzman%2F&amp;data=05%7C02%7Csvickery%40uwm.edu%7C1453d71e9fc34154b58708ddb822892d%7C0bca7ac3fcb64efd89eb6de97603cf21%7C0%7C0%7C638869180693147455%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJFbXB0eU1hcGkiOnRydWUsIlYiOiIwLjAuMDAwMCIsIlAiOiJXaW4zMiIsIkFOIjoiTWFpbCIsIldUIjoyfQ%3D%3D%7C0%7C%7C%7C&amp;sdata=aQ3dwRha550OPc5e8EtOP%2F2qeE7ZdLWUFmwuAOD6VTc%3D&amp;reserved=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>BizTimes<\/em><\/a>. She was recognized for her exceptional mentorship of undergraduate students and her research into disease development by studying zebra fish.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Associate Professor&nbsp;<strong>Suzanne Boyd (Mathematical Sciences)<\/strong>&nbsp;will be the new Associate Dean for the Natural Sciences in the College of Letters &amp; Science. Boyd brings a wealth of experience from across the university, having served as a department chair, a special assistant to the Provost, and the Director of UWM University Centers (her current role). &nbsp;She also has extensive experience in governance, having chaired or served on many university committees. Her research involves the analysis of dynamical systems. Boyd will begin in this new role on July 7. She takes over from Daad Saffarini.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-in-the-media-and-around-the-community-nbsp\"><strong>In the Media and around the Community<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <strong>David Kaplan (Physics) <\/strong>and <strong>Akash Anumarlapudi (\u201825, PhD Physics) <\/strong>were part of a team of researchers who recently published their discovery of a unique space object emitting both radio waves and X-rays. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jsonline.com\/story\/news\/education\/2025\/06\/11\/uwm-scientists-help-discover-mysterious-space-phenomenon\/83921296007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Milwaukee Journal Sentinel<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>reported on the news.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The position of the sunrise changes throughout the year, thanks to the Earth&#8217;s tilt. Her talk was delivered on July 1.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Town of Marengo, Wisconsin, asked the UWM <strong>Anthropology Department<\/strong> and graduate student <strong>Crystal Morgan<\/strong> to see if there was any truth to the rumors that there were unmarked graves in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
