{"id":12628,"date":"2020-04-23T15:31:03","date_gmt":"2020-04-23T20:31:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/?page_id=12628"},"modified":"2026-06-12T09:51:23","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T14:51:23","slug":"transfer-student","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/students\/future-undergraduate-students\/transfer-student\/","title":{"rendered":"Transfer Student"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"lead-in\">Wherever you are in your college journey, we welcome all transfer students to finish their degree in the College of Letters &amp; Science (L&amp;S).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>L&amp;S is home to many types of transfer students\u2014students with two-year degrees, adults with many or few credits from years ago, and students who are seeking a better fit than their current university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should apply as a transfer student if you have any previous college credit from another institution regardless of how old those credits are. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please note that you should apply as a <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/undergrad-admission\/apply\/re-entry\/\">re-entry student<\/a> if you are returning to UWM to complete your undergraduate degree after an absence of one year or more and have not attended another institution since leaving UWM. Students returning to UWM can\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apply.wisconsin.edu\/homepage\" class=\"uwm-c-link--external\">apply here<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are interested in one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/academics\/\">undergraduate programs in Letters &amp; Science<\/a>, we would be happy to answer your questions about the admissions process, your intended major, or your previous credits at <a href=\"mailto:let-sci@uwm.edu\">let-sci@uwm.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-request-an-unofficial-transcript-review\">Request an Unofficial Transcript Review<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You may request an unofficial transcript evaluation of your previous credits from other accredited U.S. colleges and universities. We are unable to unofficially evaluate transcripts from institutions outside of the U.S. or unaccredited institutions.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Please note that this review can take up to 10 business days. If you are making this request within four (4) weeks of an upcoming deadline to apply for admission, it is strongly recommended that you skip this unofficial evaluation and proceed directly to the application and official evaluation so that you don\u2019t miss the deadline to apply.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Please submit a transcript from each institution you have attended, even if all of your coursework is listed on your most recent transcript. We need to see the original transcript from each institution attended. To help students select transferable coursework that aligns with their intended major, we have developed transfer guides for each school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who would like to view these guides may request them by emailing&nbsp;<a href=\"mailto:let-sci@uwm.edu\">let-sci@uwm.edu<\/a>. Transfer guides can also be provided in an accessible format upon request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Students should use these guides as a planning resource rather than attempting to follow them exactly without consulting an advisor. <\/strong>Every student&#8217;s academic background, goals, and circumstances are unique, and personalized advising can help ensure that course selections align with individual needs and degree requirements. Additionally, transfer requirements and course equivalencies are subject to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below is a list of institutions and majors for which transfer guides are available. We recommend applying much earlier than these deadlines, though, to allow enough time to complete orientation, advising, and course registration. In general, transfer students are required to have a minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA to be considered for admissions. Exceptions are considered for students below a 2.0 when those grades are more than seven years old.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li class=\"uwm-c-link--external\">Complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/\">FAFSA<\/a> to apply for financial aid or if you already have FAFSA results for the year, arrange to have the data sent to UWM. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After admissions, complete the intent to enroll.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete orientation, meet with your assigned academic advisor and register for classes. Orientation for starting in the fall occurs between May and August. Once you have enrolled at UWM, you are encouraged to create a profile in UWM\u2019s scholarship portal to be considered for our scholarships for continuing students. Log into the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.academicworks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scholarship portal<\/a>, answer the questions posed, and upload a copy of your UWM transcript. An unofficial copy of your transcript is acceptable. All students with a 3.60 GPA or higher are encouraged to create a scholarship profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UWM\u2019s admissions office occasionally does offer scholarships to incoming transfer students.
