SUMMARY:From 20th-Century ‘Undesirables’ to the 2024 Paris Olympics: Women Defying French Colonial Policing
DESCRIPTION:A presentation by Dr. Jennifer Boittin\, Professor of Global History\, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. \nTeams option also available. Email wgs@uwm.edu for the link or for more information. \nJennifer Boittin is the Frank Porter Graham Distinguished Professor of Global History at UNC. She received her PhD in History from Yale University and was previously a professor at Penn State University. Her research and teaching look at how colonial spaces in West Africa\, Southeast Asia\, North Africa\, and the French Caribbean were shaped by intersections between class\, politics\, and urban culture around the world wars and decolonization. Completed in part thanks to a Paris Institute for Advanced Studies fellowship\, her second book is entitled Undesirable: Passionate Mobility and Women’s Defiance of French Colonial Policing\, 1919-1952 (2022\, University of Chicago Press). Undesirable tells the virtually unknown history of hundreds of women in Southeast Asia (French Indochina) and West Africa (AOF) tracked by authorities because they were traveling alone and claiming Frenchness. Drawn from Cambodian\, French\, and Senegalese archives\, Undesirable’s focus on how ordinary people react to being policed gives historical depth to pressing contemporary issues of migration and violence in France today and of similar reckonings on a global scale.

SUMMARY:The Many Mrs. Maisels - The History of Jewish Female Stand-Up Comedians
DESCRIPTION:Before The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel\, there was a long history of Jewish female comedians\, standing up and speaking out. Although stand-up comedy is often described as a ‘boys’ club\,’ the truth is that there have always been influential women on the scene. Alongside Jewish male comics like Groucho Marx\, Lenny Bruce\, Jack Benny\, and Jerry Seinfeld\, there were pioneering Jewish female stand-ups like Jean Carroll\, Joan Rivers\, Totie Fields\, and Sarah Silverman\, offering their inimitable insights on the experience of being a Jew—and a woman—in the United States. From tackling double standards to deflating stereotypes like the “Jewish American Princess\,” Jewish female stand-up comedians have made major contributions to the way that American audiences have seen Jewish women—and the way that Jewish women have seen themselves. \nPresented by Grace Overbeke\, assistant professor in the theatre department at Columbia College. Her academic focus is in comedy studies and has been published in Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies\, Theatre Topics\, Theatre Annual\, The New England Theatre Journal\, Theatre Survey\, Studies in American Humor\, and The Jewish Forward. She holds a BA in theatre and English from Wesleyan University and an MA and PhD. from Northwestern University in theatre and drama. \nThe Faye Sigman Woman of Valor Lecture is made possible by the generosity of the Taxman and Temkin families. \nThis is a hybrid event with both an in-person and virtual option. Free but registration required at https://wisconsin-edu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_MA66E_0MQU2q8Ftf05k99g#/registration \nCosponsored by UWM’s Departments of English and Women’s and Gender Studies; and programs in Digital Arts and Culture; Film Studies; and Journalism\, Advertising\, and Media Studies

SUMMARY:The Tragedy of Heterosexuality in Global Context: A Lecture by Jane Ward
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Women’s & Gender Studies Feminist Lecture Series\, Jane Ward\, Professor of Feminist Studies at UC Santa Barbara\, critiques one of the basic premises of the mainstream LGBT rights movement—that heterosexuality is easier than queerness—by asking for whom\, and under what conditions\, is straightness easier. \nDrawing from ethnographic field work\, archival research\, and cultural studies methods\, Ward examines the 20th century emergence of a “heterosexual repair industry” — a self-help empire designed to romanticize and ease heterosexual misery while eliding attention to heteropatriarchy and the queer\, feminist interventions poised to undo it. In this talk\, Ward takes her analysis in new directions\, pointing to the global implications of heterosexual misery by analyzing the global “anti-gender” (or “gender critical”) movement and the collective anxiety about gender and sexuality that animates it. Ward conceptualizes “gender critical” projects as expressions of heteroparanoia and psychic dissonance aimed at reconciling the paradoxes of modern heterosexuality\, and offers a feminist assessment of these projects’ trajectories.

SUMMARY:Translating and Recovering Miriam Karpilove\, Yiddish Authoress
DESCRIPTION:Jessica Kirzane presents the 2023 Faye Greenberg Sigman Woman of Valor Lecture. \nIn person and via Zoom. For Zoom link register at https://bit.ly/Kirzane \nMiriam Karpilove (1888-1956) was a prolific Yiddish writer certain of her own importance\, even as she was ignored by critics and largely forgotten during her own lifetime. In this lecture\, Jessica Kirzane\, who has devoted the past several years to translating and championing Karpilove’s work\, will explore the author’s barbed criticism of turn-of-the-century Yiddish societal expectations around gender and sexuality. Interweaving Karpilove’s biography with excerpts and discussion of her clever and humorous writing\, Kirzane will paint a portrait of a quick-witted writer and the worlds she inhabited and created. \nJessica Kirzane is the assistant instructional professor of Yiddish at the University of Chicago and the editor-in-chief of In geveb: A Journal of Yiddish Studies. She is the translator of three works by Miriam Karpilove: Diary of a Lonely Girl\, or the Battle Against Free Love (Syracuse University Press\, 2020)\, Judith: a tale of love and woe (Farlag Press\, 2022) and A Provincial Newspaper and Other Stories (Syracuse University Press\, forthcoming). Kirzane publishes regularly about Yiddish language pedagogy and Yiddish Studies pedagogy more broadly\, in addition to her scholarship on representations of gender and race in American Jewish literature. \nThe lecture is made possible by the generosity of the Taxman and Temkin families.

SUMMARY:Global Studies seminar: Making a Splash: Women Cartoonists in France
DESCRIPTION:In her talk “Making a Splash: Women Cartoonists in France\,” Dr. Cynthia Laborde will focus on the impact of women cartoonists/graphic novelists in France in the 21st century. She will trace how this new generation has been making their own rules and claiming their space in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Her analysis will focus on the socially and politically engaged aspects of their work\, concentrating especially on how they approach issues related to women. She will demonstrate that comics as a medium are able to articulate and disseminate feminist perspectives in new ways\, and that artists (such as Pénélope Bagieu and Emma\, among others) are having a real-life impact\, as the lines become more and more blurred between the individual and the artist via social media. \nCynthia Laborde is an assistant professor of modern languages at the University of Texas at Arlington. She holds a PhD from the University of Iowa (2015) and an MA in language\, literature and translation from UWM (2010). \nThis event is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Education Title VI NRC Grant. \nThis event will be followed later in the day by the opening film of the 26th annual UWM Festival of Films in French\, February 17-26\, 2023. Please join us there as well! \nWhile at UWM\, Dr. Laborde will also present a French immersion workshop\, “Enseigner (avec) les bandes dessinées en français/Teaching (with) graphic novels and comic in French\,” on Saturday\, February 18\, 1:00-4:00 pm. Free but registration is required. See that event on the calendar for more details.

SUMMARY:WGS Vilas Trust Lecture: Indigenous Art as Revisioning and Unsettling Colonial Enclosure
DESCRIPTION:Women’s & Gender Studies Vilas Trust Lecture Series continues with Mishuana Goeman\, Professor and Chair of Indigenous Studies at the University of Buffalo. The talk\, titled “Indigenous Art as Revisioning and Unsettling Colonial Enclosure\,” will examine the ways in which art and poetic practices can revision our spaces and provide new anti-colonial tools. Rethinking colonial spatial philosophies must include our mind’s eye so that we can reimagine a just world. Settler environmental control is often invisible in its scaffolding of power\, by revisioning we expose its superstructure and hopefully build new sightlines which account for colonial and racial injustice. Goeman will explore the work of video poems\, or “poemeos”\, as Heid Erdrich calls them and speak to the various role of artist and poets to create new avenues that structure healthier relationships.

SUMMARY:Dangerous Women\, Effective Changemakers - Film and Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Women changemakers have been often labeled “dangerous\,” but their voices and actions have been essential in creating positive change and remain so today. A public forum\, sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County and UWM Women’s & Gender Studies\, presents the pilot episode of a documentary series on this topic\, along with a diverse panel of younger “dangerous women” changemakers. \nPanelists include: Lauren Feaster\, the CEO of Professional Dimensions\, the leading women’s professional association in the Milwaukee area; Arvina Martin\, the first Native person ever elected to Madison’s Common Council\, and now the Executive Director of Emerge Wisconsin\, which recruits and trains women to run for public office; Marcelia Nicholson\, the first Black woman and Latina elected as Chairwoman of the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors\, recently re-elected for her second term. \nAn audience Q&A will follow the panel\, along with refreshments and the opportunity for informal interaction with the panelists. Continuing the League of Women Voters’ century-long efforts to ensure voting rights\, League of Women Voters members will staff a voter registration table. \nThe Most Dangerous Women series of documentary shorts is a project of Milwaukee-based New Moon Productions\, under the direction of Janet Fitch. It presents the stories of women changemakers\, and invites viewers to discover and document women in their own families\, communities\, and regions working towards a more just and equitable world. The pilot episode begins in 1869\, when Wyoming becomes the only territory in the world to specifically recognize women’s right to vote and to hold elected office\, a full 50 years before passage of the Nineteenth Amendment.
