SUMMARY:The Crime of Menticide: Antisemitism and Hate Speech in American Law
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies\, Distinguished Lecture by James Loeffler. This event is both in-person or via Zoom. To register for the Zoom link see https://wisconsin-edu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_8tdtZrqyTdecQvrjdfKEyg#/registration \nCan law limit hate speech without violating the First Amendment? In 1977\, a group of Holocaust survivors from Skokie\, Illinois filed a class action lawsuit to stop a planned neo-Nazi march by alleging menticide — the psychological equivalent of genocide. Nazi words and symbols constituted a form of violence\, they claimed\, not constitutionally protected speech. In this lecture\, historian James Loeffler reconstructs this curious episode and discusses its larger implications for the contemporary debate over antisemitism and free speech in American law. \nJames Loeffler is Felix Posen Professor of Jewish History at Johns Hopkins University\, and co-editor of the Association for Jewish Studies Review. His writings include two award-winning books\, Rooted Cosmopolitans: Jews and Human Rights in the Twentieth Century and The Most Musical Nation: Jews and Culture in the Late Russian Empire\, and two edited volumes\, The Law of Strangers: Jewish Lawyers and International Law in the Twentieth Century and A Jew in the Street: New Views on European Jewish History. He is currently writing a book about antisemitism and the First Amendment in postwar America\, which grew out of his Atlantic magazine article about his coverage of the trial of the White Supremacist organizers of the 2017 attack on Charlottesville. \nContact Rachel Baum at rbaum@uwm.edu or 414-229-5156 with questions or for assistance.

SUMMARY:Robo-Buddhism: Kokoro\, Technology\, and Spirituality in Japan Today
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Professor Jennifer Robertson\, professor emerita\, University of Michigan \nKokoro (心) is widely and innovatively used in everyday parlance and figures in many Japanese idioms. Kokoro connotes intellectual\, emotional\, and spiritual states and attributes. Kokoro is also a key lexeme in Japan’s two main religions: the animistic native Shintō and Buddhism. In August 2017\, SoftBank’s humanoid robot Pepper role-played as a Buddhist priest at a funeral services expo under the supervision of a human priest who assessed whether the robot was able perform “with kokoro.” When theorizing human-robot interactions\, roboticists also include kokoro as a crucial quality and effect of social engagement. Kokoro figures centrally in the titles of several Japanese books on robots and AI. Several cognitive roboticists are working to “imagineer” (imagine + engineer) robot kokoro through innovative software algorithms and creative interpretations of AI. Pepper was conceived as a humanoid robot “with kokoro.” Technology and robots have been developed and applied for both secular and religious purposes\, although the appropriation of robotic technologies and AI for religious purposes is perhaps less recognized than their secular applications. This presentation explores how religious technologies and affective human-robot relations are conjointly imagineered theoretically and in practice. \nThis talk is generously sponsored by the Northeast Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies\, US Department of Education Title VI NRC Grant\, Asian Studies Certificate Program\, Department of Global Studies\, Department of Anthropology\, Japanese Program\, and Honors College.

SUMMARY:Race\, Justice\, Power - Undergraduate Research Conference
DESCRIPTION:UWM’s Honors Equity Team and co-sponsors\, the Inclusive Excellence Center and Student Involvement host the first “Race\, Justice\, Power!” Undergraduate Research Conference to strengthen UWM’s commitment to antiracist activism. We are highlighting various undergraduate students’ multidisciplinary research on issues that challenge racial oppression. Snacks and beverages will be provided for attendees. \nThe conference features Keynote Speaker and Rufus King High School alumnus\, Adam Carr (he/him)\, Milwaukee Historian and story-collector\, whose community-minded research chronicles Milwaukee’s history that exists in the margins. Carr got his start exploring Milwaukee’s history at 88Nine Radio Milwaukee\, where he served as a producer for three years and featured 800 stories — many of which provided direct testimonies of liberation and triumph from Milwaukee’s BIPOC community. Since his time at 88Nine\, Carr continues to chronicle Milwaukee’s people’s history\, to bring context to the social issues affecting us all today. Carr provides personal tours of our city\, which privileges stories oftentimes overlooked by traditional historians. His work has been featured at Milwaukee Film Festival\, and recognized in various publications\, like Milwaukee Journal Sentinal\, On Milwaukee\, Urban Milwaukee\, Shepherd Express\, and more. \nMKE101: Interpreting stories of freedom in Milwaukee\nIf Milwaukee’s story were a bookshelf\, many of our most important stories have yet to be published. This has led too many of us to accept overly simplistic narratives about the city\, while others deem the moment too complex to penetrate. We need to do better.\nIn this session\, we will build a foundational narrative for understanding Milwaukee\, then explore how lessons from our shared history can propel us towards a better future. In particular\, we will touch on three canonical stories in Milwaukee’s movement history: the Open Housing Marches\, Chapman Hall Takeover and origins of Milwaukee’s Indian Community School. We will engage with each of these remarkable stories\, then consider the community infrastructure and collaboration that was required in each case. Be prepared to draw\, diagram and even move (no special skills required). \nSchedule:\n11:30a – 1:00p — Adam Carr\, Keynote\n1:15p – 2:00p — Onisha Dale\, Ian Schmitt\, Liz Karpowitz\n2:00p – 2:30p — Alejandra Gonzalez & Samawia Akhter\n2:40p – 3:10p — Jo Fox & Ronan Carpenter\n3:20p – 3:50p — Maddi Kalous & Owen Geurts\nMC’d by Mia Heredia\, Honors Equity Team Graduate Mentor and Student Association President. \nPlease note\, due to the sensitive nature of the Undergraduate Research Conference\, some topics featured in presentations will heavily feature topics of systemic\, racial oppression and other\, intersecting issues of race. \nAccessibility & Other Questions:\nPlease email honors-antiracism@uwm.edu for accessibility requests (interpreting services\, wheelchair accommodations\, etc.) or any questions\, comments\, or concerns related to the conference.

SUMMARY:Game Night at the Honors College
DESCRIPTION:The Honors College Equity Team welcomes all UWM students to join in this role-playing game event. We’ll gather in the Honors House to play the Deep Forest — a collaborative\, world-building game focused on monstrosity and decolonization. \nEven if you’ve never participated in a role-playing game before\, this is a great opportunity to meet new people\, build community\, and explore post-colonial weird fantasy. Take a break from studying and join us in person on April 1st or online on April 2nd. \nAll are welcome! No gaming experience necessary.
