SUMMARY:Robo-Buddhism: Kokoro\, Technology\, and Spirituality in Japan Today
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Professor Jennifer Robertson\, professor emerita\, University of Michigan \nKokoro (心) is widely and innovatively used in everyday parlance and figures in many Japanese idioms. Kokoro connotes intellectual\, emotional\, and spiritual states and attributes. Kokoro is also a key lexeme in Japan’s two main religions: the animistic native Shintō and Buddhism. In August 2017\, SoftBank’s humanoid robot Pepper role-played as a Buddhist priest at a funeral services expo under the supervision of a human priest who assessed whether the robot was able perform “with kokoro.” When theorizing human-robot interactions\, roboticists also include kokoro as a crucial quality and effect of social engagement. Kokoro figures centrally in the titles of several Japanese books on robots and AI. Several cognitive roboticists are working to “imagineer” (imagine + engineer) robot kokoro through innovative software algorithms and creative interpretations of AI. Pepper was conceived as a humanoid robot “with kokoro.” Technology and robots have been developed and applied for both secular and religious purposes\, although the appropriation of robotic technologies and AI for religious purposes is perhaps less recognized than their secular applications. This presentation explores how religious technologies and affective human-robot relations are conjointly imagineered theoretically and in practice. \nThis talk is generously sponsored by the Northeast Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies\, US Department of Education Title VI NRC Grant\, Asian Studies Certificate Program\, Department of Global Studies\, Department of Anthropology\, Japanese Program\, and Honors College.

SUMMARY:The Tragedy of Heterosexuality in Global Context: A Lecture by Jane Ward
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Women’s & Gender Studies Feminist Lecture Series\, Jane Ward\, Professor of Feminist Studies at UC Santa Barbara\, critiques one of the basic premises of the mainstream LGBT rights movement—that heterosexuality is easier than queerness—by asking for whom\, and under what conditions\, is straightness easier.  \nDrawing from ethnographic field work\, archival research\, and cultural studies methods\, Ward examines the 20th century emergence of a “heterosexual repair industry” — a self-help empire designed to romanticize and ease heterosexual misery while eliding attention to heteropatriarchy and the queer\, feminist interventions poised to undo it. In this talk\, Ward takes her analysis in new directions\, pointing to the global implications of heterosexual misery by analyzing the global “anti-gender” (or “gender critical”) movement and the collective anxiety about gender and sexuality that animates it. Ward conceptualizes “gender critical” projects as expressions of heteroparanoia and psychic dissonance aimed at reconciling the paradoxes of modern heterosexuality\, and offers a feminist assessment of these projects’ trajectories.

SUMMARY:Technologies of Failure: Disembodied Performance in Transwar Japan
DESCRIPTION:Contemporary Japanese theater has challenged the conventional definition of performance as a co-present event between performers and audience. Through the use of technologies such as VR and motion capture\, recent performances have disrupted the primacy of co-presence in theater. This talk revisits performances from the mid-Showa Period (1925-1989) in Japan by influential figures in Modern Japanese theater including Senda Koreya\, Murayama Tomoyoshi\, and Terayama Shuji. Nearly a century ago\, these productions foreshadowed contemporary technological advancements and provide a historical context for our current moment’s techno-optimism. They utilized film\, radio\, and other technologies to create performances that wrestled with the mediating function of technology and the centrality of the body in performance. By examining these productions\, this talk proposes a way beyond the dichotomy of liveness and mediation\, leading to a deeper understanding of the relationship between technology and performance in contemporary theater. \nPresented by UWM professor of Japanese Aragorn Quinn.

DESCRIPTION:Boswell Books hosts an evening with UWM Professor of Italian Robin Pickering-Iazzi for a conversation about her latest work\, the first English translation of Maria Rosa Cutrufelli’s classic of Italian feminist mafia literature about a dangerous\, enigmatic young gangster pushing the boundaries of gender and propriety. \nGreat for fans of classic mafia literature like “The Godfather” and “Donnie Brasco”\, Pickering-Iazzi’s beautifully rendered translation offers readers a groundbreaking exploration of gender identity and clear-eyed presentation of an unseen side of the mafia. At just eight years old\, Tina watched her father murdered in cold blood. Now a teenager\, she terrorizes her hometown of Gela\, having made it her mission to join the mafia\, an organization traditionally forbidden to women as made members. Nicknamed ’a masculidda\, or “the tomboy\,” Tina has taken charge of her own gang\, and is notorious for her cruelty and reckless disregard for societal expectations. \nPickering-Iazzi’s translation offers a fascinating look into a specific moment in queer history: a crypto-trans narrative set in a time when Italian society was incredibly conservative. DESCRIPTION:This interactive French Immersion workshop is for French teachers at all levels K through 16. It will be led by Dr. Cynthia Laborde (Modern Languages\, University of Texas at Arlington and UWM alumna). \nAttend in-person (refreshments will be provided) or accommodations will be made if you need to attend online. \nThis workshop is free and open to all current\, future\, and former teachers of all levels of French. SUMMARY:Global Studies seminar: Making a Splash: Women Cartoonists in France
DESCRIPTION:In her talk “Making a Splash: Women Cartoonists in France\,” Dr. Cynthia Laborde will focus on the impact of women cartoonists/graphic novelists in France in the 21st century. She will trace how this new generation has been making their own rules and claiming their space in a traditionally male-dominated industry. Her analysis will focus on the socially and politically engaged aspects of their work\, concentrating especially on how they approach issues related to women. She will demonstrate that comics as a medium are able to articulate and disseminate feminist perspectives in new ways\, and that artists (such as Pénélope Bagieu and Emma\, among others) are having a real-life impact\, as the lines become more and more blurred between the individual and the artist via social media. \nCynthia Laborde is an assistant professor of modern languages at the University of Texas at Arlington. She holds a PhD from the University of Iowa (2015) and an MA in language\, literature and translation from UWM (2010). \nThis event is partially funded by the U.S. Department of Education Title VI NRC Grant. \nThis event will be followed later in the day by the opening film of the 26th annual UWM Festival of Films in French\, February 17-26\, 2023. Please join us there as well! \nWhile at UWM\, Dr. Laborde will also present a French immersion workshop\, “Enseigner (avec) les bandes dessinées en français/Teaching (with) graphic novels and comic in French\,” on Saturday\, February 18\, 1:00-4:00 pm. SUMMARY:Son-Mother: Screening and Discussion of Iranian director Mahnaz Mohamaddi's 2019 film
DESCRIPTION:Iranian director and women’s rights activist Mahnaz Mohammadi’s 2019 film Son-Mother depicts Leila\, a single working mom of two who loses her factory job. Kazem\, the factory bus driver\, proposes marriage to Leila\, but she hesitates to accept his conditions that will break her family apart. After the film screening\, stay for a discussion of this recent film and its possible connection to the ongoing revolution in Iran. \nFilmmaker Mahnaz Mohammadi is an Iranian filmmaker and women’s rights activist. Her work has led to her arrest three times on charges related to Iranian national security and propaganda against the state with her most recent conviction sending her to the infamous Evin Prison in Tehran.

Would you like to learn about options for internships\, how to find and secure one\, and what you might learn? Please join us for a panel discussion and networking to learn about internship opportunities for students in the social sciences and humanities. \nHear from local professionals about opportunities at their companies\, non-profit organizations\, and government agencies. The panel will include professionals from the Milwaukee Justice Center\, the City of Milwaukee\, US Senate offices\, and Associated Bank\, along with current interns. Panelists will share what interns do at their organization and what skills you can build. You can hear about their professional journey as well as how current interns are experiencing their positions. The panel discussion will be 45 minutes\, with 15 minutes for questions.
