SUMMARY:The Many Mrs. Maisels - The History of Jewish Female Stand-Up Comedians
DESCRIPTION:Before The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel\, there was a long history of Jewish female comedians\, standing up and speaking out. Although stand-up comedy is often described as a ‘boys’ club\,’ the truth is that there have always been influential women on the scene. Alongside Jewish male comics like Groucho Marx\, Lenny Bruce\, Jack Benny\, and Jerry Seinfeld\, there were pioneering Jewish female stand-ups like Jean Carroll\, Joan Rivers\, Totie Fields\, and Sarah Silverman\, offering their inimitable insights on the experience of being a Jew—and a woman—in the United States. From tackling double standards to deflating stereotypes like the “Jewish American Princess\,” Jewish female stand-up comedians have made major contributions to the way that American audiences have seen Jewish women—and the way that Jewish women have seen themselves. \nPresented by Grace Overbeke\, assistant professor in the theatre department at Columbia College. Her academic focus is in comedy studies and has been published in Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies\, Theatre Topics\, Theatre Annual\, The New England Theatre Journal\, Theatre Survey\, Studies in American Humor\, and The Jewish Forward. She holds a BA in theatre and English from Wesleyan University and an MA and PhD. from Northwestern University in theatre and drama. \nThe Faye Sigman Woman of Valor Lecture is made possible by the generosity of the Taxman and Temkin families. \nThis is a hybrid event with both an in-person and virtual option. Free but registration required at https://wisconsin-edu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_MA66E_0MQU2q8Ftf05k99g#/registration \nCosponsored by UWM’s Departments of English and Women’s and Gender Studies; and programs in Digital Arts and Culture; Film Studies; and Journalism\, Advertising\, and Media Studies

SUMMARY:Fandom\, The Next Generation: Book Talk with Bridget Keyes + Megan Connor
DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion 10:30 am to 11:30 am\nBook Talk 2:30 pm to 4:00 pm \nImagine a Millennial parent taking their child to see The Last Jedi after their Baby Boomer parents took them to see Return of the Jedi. Picture longtime friends attending a Backstreet Boys reunion concert as adults. For better or worse\, reboots\, remakes\, and revivals are now a standard media industry practice. New modes of distribution and exhibition have further changed fans’ abilities to encounter or re-encounter media texts. Bridget Kies (’18 English PhD) and Megan Connor (’15 English MA) offer one of the first close studies of fan generations\, looking at how these generations are influenced by and\, in turn\, influence technologies\, industry practices\, and social and political changes. \nBridget Kies is assistant professor of Film Studies and Production at Oakland University\, where she also serves on the executive committee for the Women and Gender Studies program. Her research on sexualities and media fandoms has been published in the journals Feminist Media Histories\, Science Fiction Film and Television\, Journal of Popular Romance Studies\, Transformative Works and Cultures\, and Intensities\, as well as several edited collections. With Megan Connor\, she is co-editor of Fandom\, the Next Generation (2022). She has also co-edited issues of Queer Studies in Media and Popular Culture and Participations. She is currently writing a book about the enduring popularity of Murder\, She Wrote. \nMegan Connor received her PhD from Indiana University’s Media School\, where she now serves as research coordinator at the Institute for Communication Research. Her research examines girls’ media\, celebrity\, and fandom. Her dissertation used an archive of teen magazines such as Seventeen and Teen Vogue to explore the construction and promotion of celebrity girlhood in the 2000s as an idealized form of youthful femininity. With Bridget Kies\, Megan is co-editor of Fandom\, the Next Generation (2022). Her work has been published in The Black Girlhood Studies Collection (2019) and the journal Black Camera\, where she also served as managing editor for several years.

SUMMARY:The Rise of Right-Wing Comedy
DESCRIPTION:That’s Not Funny: How the Right Makes Comedy Work for Them argues that it is both an intellectual and politically strategic mistake to assume that comedy has a liberal bias. Right-wing comedy has been hiding in plain sight\, finding its way into mainstream conservative media through figures ranging from Fox News’s Greg Gutfeld to libertarian podcasters like Joe Rogan. \nSelected as a 2022 Best Comedy Book by Vulture\, That’s Not Funny taps interviews with conservative comedians and observations of them inaction. You may find many of these comedians appalling\, some very funny\, and others just plain weird. They are all\, however\, culturally and politically relevant as the American right attempts to seize spaces of comedy and irony previously held firmly by the left. Like this brand of humor or not\, you can’t ignore it. \nNick Marx is Associate Professor of Film and Media Studies in the Department of Communication Studies at Colorado State University.

SUMMARY:Film Screening of Maksym Osa
DESCRIPTION:A Ukrainian film production that was interrupted by the Russian invasions in 2014 and again in 2022\, Maksym Osa is a fantasy thriller set in the 1600s\, yet deeply resonant with the present. Here\, the contemporary tenacity of Ukrainians in defense of their independence\, which has taken the world utterly by surprise\, is placed in a larger historical context. In its focus on the Cossacks\, a Ukrainian-created self-defense force\, as multidimensional figures\, Maksym Osa argues for the historical roots of Ukraine as a European and global nation. \nA Roundtable Introduction will feature a discussion with the Ukrainian filmmakers of the Maksym Osa project. \nFree but registration required. https://uwm.edu/c21/event/remote-film-screening-of-maksym-osa/2022-04-14/
