SUMMARY:Modern Impacts: Celebrating 50 Years of the Rosenberg Collection at UWM
DESCRIPTION:Modern Impacts: Celebrating 50 Years of the Rosenberg Collection at UWM honors the fiftieth anniversary of the foundational bequest of the Blanche and Henry Rosenberg Art Collection to UWM. In 1974\, the UWM Art Collection was much like the young university itself: small\, impressive\, and growing. With this significant gift\, the artwork on campus more than doubled in number and was codified into one collection that highlighted modern art of the twentieth century. \nThis exhibition presents the personal aesthetic interests of the Rosenbergs while also considering collecting trends of the mid-twentieth century. The breadth and depth of the collection is especially significant when evaluating their decision to bequeath their collection to UWM to support teaching and learning. Major modern artists featured include Pablo Picasso\, Georges Braque\, Joan Miró\, Ernst Kirchner\, Jean Arp\, Barbara Hepworth\, Henry Moore\, Jean Dubuffet\, Alexei Jawlensky\, and more. Also presented are works by the donor\, Blanche Rosenberg\, who studied in the fine arts department here at UWM. SUMMARY:Math Colloquium: Parabolic System of Aggregation Formation in Bacterial Colonies
DESCRIPTION:The goal of this talk is to study a fourth-order nonlinear parabolic system with dispersion for describing bacterial aggregation. Analytical solution of traveling wave is found by taking into account the dispersion coefficient. Numerically\, we demonstrate that the initial concentration of bacteria in the form of a random distribution over time transforms into a periodic wave\, followed by a transition to a stationary solitary wave without dispersion. \nPresented by Dr. Zhaosheng Feng\, Endowed Chair Professor of Mathematics\, University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

SUMMARY:Math Colloquium: Baby Mandelbrot Sets for Maximally Generalized McMullen Maps
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Dr. Daniel Stoertz\, Visiting Assistant Professor of Mathematics at St. Olaf College. \nIn Complex Dynamics\, we study the iteration of holomorphic or meromorphic functions on the complex plane or the Riemann sphere. Of particular interest is the behavior of the critical orbits of function families with one or more parameters. The simplest of such families\, z^2 +c\, is well-known to define the famous Mandelbrot set fractal as the set of c-values for which the unique critical orbit is bounded. In this talk we will examine the function family R(z) = z^n +b +a/(z^d)\, and we will explore old and new results establishing the location of baby Mandelbrot sets in parameter space for increasingly general versions of this family. In the most general case\, which we call maximally generalized McMullen maps\, this family has multiple independent critical orbits\, and the dynamics in this case are not yet well understood.

DESCRIPTION:CLACS welcomes all guests to catch up with colleagues and students and meet the new Associate Director\, Monica VanBladel. Light refreshments will be provided.  \nDr. Monica VanBladel starts at UWM on September 25th. Monica comes to UWM with a rich professional background in Latin American literature and culture. While a doctoral student at Stanford University\, she co-coordinated programming with the Center for Latin American Studies for several years. Monica has experience with teacher training\, curricular reforms in Spanish language pedagogy and first-year curricula. While at Reed College\, she served as a co-PI on a multi-year community engaged learning grant (Mellon Foundation)\, which brought new resources and partnerships to the college. As part of the grant experience\, Monica developed new community partnerships with diverse stakeholders to further shared goals in the Portland community. She is fluent in Spanish and an advanced speaker of Portuguese\, having benefited from a FLAS fellowship.

With this significant gift\, the artwork on campus more than doubled in number and was codified into one collection that highlighted modern art of the twentieth century. \nThis exhibition presents the personal aesthetic interests of the Rosenbergs while also considering collecting trends of the mid-twentieth century. The breadth and depth of the collection is especially significant when evaluating their decision to bequeath their collection to UWM to support teaching and learning. Major modern artists featured include Pablo Picasso\, Georges Braque\, Joan Miró\, Ernst Kirchner\, Jean Arp\, Barbara Hepworth\, Henry Moore\, Jean Dubuffet\, Alexei Jawlensky\, and more. SUMMARY:From malaria to chatGPT: the birth and strange life of the random walk
DESCRIPTION:The Dean’s Distinguished Lecture in the Natural Sciences for 2024 features Professor Jordan S. Ellenberg from UW-Madison. \nThe “random walk” is a mathematical concept which underlies the way scientists now think about everything from stock markets to Wisconsin’s legislative districts to the latest developments in AI.  Ellenberg will talk about the surprising history of this concept\, which between 1905-1910 was invented simultaneously by multiple people in multiple countries for completely different purposes\, from mosquito control to physics to finance to winning a theological argument (really!)  And then he will move to the present day and talk about the rise of large language models\, the modern descendants of the random walk.  Are they just mindless algorithms\, or can they generate authentically new ideas in writing and math? \nEllenberg is the John D. MacArthur Professor of Mathematics and Vilas Distinguished Achievement Professor of Mathematics at UW-Madison. He is the author of New York Times bestsellers  “How Not to be Wrong\,” and “Shape: The Hidden Geometry of Absolutely Everything\,” as well as many research papers. This exhibition and archiving project features pins mined from her personal collection accumulated over a lifetime of work in the political and legal landscape of the US. The exhibition also features work by emerging and established artists and jewelers\, and UWM Jewelry & Metalsmithing students who have created artwork that act as messaging devices inspired by items from the Special Collections. The breadth and depth of the collection is especially significant when evaluating their decision to bequeath their collection to UWM to support teaching and learning. Major modern artists featured include Pablo Picasso\, Georges Braque\, Joan Miró\, Ernst Kirchner\, Jean Arp\, Barbara Hepworth\, Henry Moore\, Jean Dubuffet\, Alexei Jawlensky\, and more. Also presented are works by the donor\, Blanche Rosenberg\, who studied in the fine arts department here at UWM. SUMMARY:Creative Writing Program Visiting Writer: Mecca Jamilah Sullivan
DESCRIPTION:Mecca Jamilah Sullivan is the visiting writing for Fall 2024. Mecca is an award-winning fiction writer and critic. The craft talk will be at 3 pm and a reading and Q&A will be at 7 pm. \nMecca Jamilah Sullivan’s fiction explores the intellectual\, emotional\, and bodily lives of young black women through voice\, music\, and hip-hop inflected magical realist techniques. She is the author of the short story collection Blue Talk and Love (2015)\, winner of the Judith Markowitz Award for Fiction from Lambda Literary; The Poetics of Difference: Queer Feminist Forms in the African Diaspora (2022)\, winner of the William Sanders Scarborough Prize from the Modern Language Association; and her critically acclaimed debut novel Big Girl (W.W. Norton & Co. 2022)\, which was a New York Times Editors’ Choice and winner of the Next Generation Indie Book Award and the Balcones Fiction Prize. \nAbout Sullivan’s debut novel\, Big Girl\, Kiese Laymon says\, “There are three books on earth that I would give anything to be able to write and reread until the sun burns us up. Big Girl is one of those books. The sound\, the expansiveness of the whispers\, the critical\, brilliant\, sometimes bruising\, beautiful Black girlness explored in this novel is literally second to none. I know I have just read and reread a new American classic that we as a culture and country desperately need. Believe that.” While Rick Moody succinctly observes her writing to feel “nearly Faulknerian.” \nSullivan’s short stories have appeared in Best New Writing\, Kenyon Review\, American Fiction: Best New Stories by Emerging Writers\, Prairie Schooner\, Callaloo\, Crab Orchard Review\, Robert Olen Butler Fiction Prize Stories\, BLOOM: Queer Fiction\, Art\, Poetry and More\, TriQuarterly\, Feminist Studies\, All About Skin: Short Stories by Award-Winning Women Writers of Color\, DC Metro Weekly\, Baobab: South African Journal of New Writing\, and many others. A 2016 Pushcart Prize nominee\, she is the winner of the Charles Johnson Fiction Award\, the Glenna Luschei Fiction Award\, the James Baldwin Memorial Playwriting Award\, and honors from the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture\, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference\, Lambda Literary\, and the Center for Fiction in New York City\, where she received an inaugural Emerging Writers Fellowship. \nA proud native of Harlem\, NY\, Sullivan’s critical and scholarly work on sexuality\, identity\, and poetics in contemporary African Diaspora culture has appeared in The Cut\, Feminist Studies\, American Quarterly\, College Literature\, The Rumpus\, Ebony.com\, The Feminist Wire\, Black Futures\, and many others. SUMMARY:Living on the Edge: Armenian art and the margins of art history
DESCRIPTION:The 2024 Friends of Art History Lecture marks the 60th anniversary of the Department of Art History at UWM. Our speaker is Professor Christina Maranci of Harvard University (Department of Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations\, Department of History of Art and Architecture)\, where she holds the Mashtots Chair in Armenian Studies. Professor Maranci taught in our own department from 2001 until 2008\, and we are thrilled to welcome her back to Milwaukee. \nProfessor Maranci is the author of four books and over 100 articles and essays on medieval Armenian art and architecture\, including most recently\, the Art of Armenia (Oxford UP\, 2018). Her 2015 monograph\, Vigilant Powers: Three Churches of Early Medieval Armenia (Brepols\, 2015) won the Karen Gould Prize for Art History from the Medieval Academy of America and as well as the Sona Aronian Prize for best Armenian Studies monograph from the National Association for Armenian Studies and Research (NAASR). She has also published op eds. and essays in the Wall Street Journal\, Apollo\, The Conversation\, and Hyperallergic\, and has been featured on National Public Radio’s Open Source with Christopher Lydon. \nFor her work\, she received in 2024 the Moses Khorenatsi Medal from the President of the Republic of Armenia. \nImage: Lectionary of Het’um II\, 1286. In 1974\, the UWM Art Collection was much like the young university itself: small\, impressive\, and growing. With this significant gift\, the artwork on campus more than doubled in number and was codified into one collection that highlighted modern art of the twentieth century. \nThis exhibition presents the personal aesthetic interests of the Rosenbergs while also considering collecting trends of the mid-twentieth century. The breadth and depth of the collection is especially significant when evaluating their decision to bequeath their collection to UWM to support teaching and learning. Major modern artists featured include Pablo Picasso\, Georges Braque\, Joan Miró\, Ernst Kirchner\, Jean Arp\, Barbara Hepworth\, Henry Moore\, Jean Dubuffet\, Alexei Jawlensky\, and more. Also presented are works by the donor\, Blanche Rosenberg\, who studied in the fine arts department here at UWM. SUMMARY:Indigeneity and Writing: Rethinking Indigenismo in Early 20th Century Latin America
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jorge Coronado\, Professor of Latin American and Andean Literatures\, Co-Director\, Andean Cultures & Histories at Northwestern University. \nIn this talk\, Professor Coronado reconsiders the scholarly frameworks within which we locate indigenista literature\, arguably the broadest literary movement in the Latin American 20th century. His goal in doing so is to understand a separate body of lettered practices whose origins cannot be accounted for without considering the role of indigenismo. These ‘other’ lettered practices are mostly\, but not solely\, created by indigenous peoples. As importantly\, accounting for this body of literature involves articulating a notion of indigeneity that does not arise exclusively as an expression of an indigenous identity or culture\, but rather as the product of collaborations and exchanges between indigenous and non-indigenous actors in a wide\, or widened\, discursive field.
