SUMMARY:Marden Lecture in Math: The intrigue that compels us
DESCRIPTION:When we witness unexpected phenomena\, a mathematician finds themselves asking: why? We are compelled to understand further; what is the cause\, the basic underlying principles? Mathematics is full of symmetries\, patterns and visuals that we can appreciate in their own right or use to explain and illustrate concepts. And\, they can also drive us to discovery. I will tell a story of chip-firing\, a mathematical idea that leads to fascinatingly intricate structures. The imagery of these structures has spurred many questions to which we know surprisingly few answers. \nPresented by Professor Caroline Klivans\, Brown University. \nA reception follows the lecture in EMS E495. \nThe Marden lecture\, along with Marden scholarships\, is supported by the Marden family. Dr. Morris Marden (1905-1991) was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Mathematics and is generally considered to have been the founder of the Mathematics Department at UWM as a research department\, and he is the person most responsible for the beginning of graduate programs at UWM.

SUMMARY:Integrated Social-Ecological Research: Insights on Urban Environmental Dynamics for Landscape Sustainability
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Professor Kelli Larson\, School of Sustainability\, Arizona State University as part of the annual  Harold and Florence Mayer Lecture. \nAbstract: Residential landscapes\, including lawns and other types of vegetation\, are an increasingly important component of urban ecosystems. Turfgrass lawns are now among the largest irrigated crops in the U.S.\, contributing to high rates of water and fertilizer use. Yet we know little about the social and ecological dynamics of different landscape types\, such as mesic lawns and xeric yards\, which involve a diverse array of potential values and associated decision tradeoffs. Past research has largely focused on either social or ecological elements of residential landscapes\, for example\, historic and modern aesthetic preferences or the composition and diversity of species. Our ongoing project aims to advance integrated knowledge about residential landscapes as important components of urban ecosystems by examining how cognitive (cultural values\, beliefs\, and norms) and structural (social institutions and urban form) factors drive yard management practices\, and in turn\, affect biogeochemical and ecological processes at the household and neighborhood scales. Within this overarching framework\, our workshop course explored two primary research objectives. First\, we examined the influence of residents’ values on landscape structure and the degree to which expressed preferences match actual landscape choices\, and second\, we assessed how neighborhood-level institutions impact landscape structure\, with special focus on the legacy effects of development decisions. To address the first objective\, we linked social survey data with extensive observational field surveys in four case study neighborhoods throughout Phoenix\, Arizona. For the second goal\, we examined the Covenants\, Codes and Restrictions (CCRs) in Homeowner Associations (HOAs) that govern landscaping\, in addition to conducting interviews with developers about their landscaping decisions and how they have changed over time. Our findings highlight the significance of multiple scales of human drivers (see Figure 1) in the broader context of the social-ecology of residential landscapes. Although values were not a strong driver of yard choices\, they mildly influenced both expressed preferences and manifest choices in diverse Phoenix neighborhoods\, particularly domain-specific values embodied in environmentally-oriented yard maintenance priorities. Meanwhile\, our analyses of institutional forces highlights the role of broader structural forces that influence residential landscape structure and management. As developers respond to market conditions and broader constraints in producing residential landscapes over time\, the effects may last long into the future since original development decisions establish the built context and become institutionalized in HOA CCRs. Our analysis of a sample of Covenants\, Codes\, and Restrictions for Phoenix-area subdivisions specifically indicated the potential for neighborhoodlevel private institutions to dictate landscape maintenance and structure\, topography and water management\, and species composition\, with potentially significant impacts on the ecosystem services provided. In sum\, further interdisciplinary analysis of the human drivers of yard structure and management at multiple scales (see Figure 1)—from households and neighborhoods to municipalities and broader regional forces—will reveal the complex dynamics involved in the production of residential landscapes and their social and ecological consequences for current and future generations.

SUMMARY:Robo-Buddhism: Kokoro\, Technology\, and Spirituality in Japan Today
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Professor Jennifer Robertson\, professor emerita\, University of Michigan \nKokoro (心) is widely and innovatively used in everyday parlance and figures in many Japanese idioms. Kokoro connotes intellectual\, emotional\, and spiritual states and attributes. Kokoro is also a key lexeme in Japan’s two main religions: the animistic native Shintō and Buddhism. In August 2017\, SoftBank’s humanoid robot Pepper role-played as a Buddhist priest at a funeral services expo under the supervision of a human priest who assessed whether the robot was able perform “with kokoro.” When theorizing human-robot interactions\, roboticists also include kokoro as a crucial quality and effect of social engagement. Kokoro figures centrally in the titles of several Japanese books on robots and AI. Several cognitive roboticists are working to “imagineer” (imagine + engineer) robot kokoro through innovative software algorithms and creative interpretations of AI. Pepper was conceived as a humanoid robot “with kokoro.” Technology and robots have been developed and applied for both secular and religious purposes\, although the appropriation of robotic technologies and AI for religious purposes is perhaps less recognized than their secular applications. This presentation explores how religious technologies and affective human-robot relations are conjointly imagineered theoretically and in practice. \nThis talk is generously sponsored by the Northeast Asia Council of the Association for Asian Studies\, US Department of Education Title VI NRC Grant\, Asian Studies Certificate Program\, Department of Global Studies\, Department of Anthropology\, Japanese Program\, and Honors College.

SUMMARY:The Crime of Menticide: Antisemitism and Hate Speech in American Law - EVENT CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:DUE TO UNFORESEEN CIRCUMSTANCES\, THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. \nIn 1977\, a group of Holocaust survivors from Skokie\, Illinois\, filed a lawsuit to stop a planned neo-Nazi march by alleging menticide—the psychological equivalent of genocide. \nIn this lecture\, historian James Loeffler reconstructs this curious legal episode and discusses its larger implications for the contemporary debate over antisemitism and free speech. James Loeffler is Felix Posen Professor of Jewish History at Johns Hopkins University. His writings include two award-winning books\, Rooted Cosmopolitans: Jews and Human Rights in the Twentieth Century and The Most Musical Nation: Jews and Culture in the Late Russian Empire. He is currently writing a book about antisemitism and the First Amendment in postwar America. \nPart of the UWM Sam and Helen Stahl Center for Jewish Studies’ Distinguished Lecture series.

SUMMARY:Complementing Flood Insurance Rate Maps with Community Resilience Estimates Data in Milwaukee County
DESCRIPTION:Thesis presentation of Christopher Archuleta: Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) are primarily used for determining flood insurance rates and for determining which properties are required to have flood insurance under the National Flood Insurance Program. However\, they are also flood risk maps that can serve as risk communication tools. FIRMs have several sources of bias and inaccuracy. As a result\, their capacity to communicate flood risk is limited. FIRMs should be complemented with relevant datasets to ascertain a more holistic notion of risk. I propose to investigate the effectiveness of complementing FIRMs with Community Resilience Estimates Data from the US Census Bureau to communicate flood risk. To conduct this study\, National Flood Hazard Layer data and Community Resilience Estimates data will be combined in flood risk maps based on risk communication and cartography design principles. Surveys will then be administered to Milwaukee County residents to evaluate how successful these maps are at conveying the spatial distribution of flood risk and the contribution of social vulnerability to flood risk. The results from this study could show the potential of using FIRMs for more holistic flood risk communication purposes.

Emphasizing the heightened susceptibility of young children during organ development\, the research examines literature on sources of household lead exposure and the complex interplay of sociodemographic factors contributing to the risk of childhood lead poisoning. In the context of Milwaukee’s notable racial and socioeconomic disparities\, the study assesses the existing intervention strategies. Key considerations include their effectiveness\, alignment with racial residential segregation\, and their impact on vulnerable communities. The research also delves into the geographical placement of interventions concerning areas of exposure and the criteria used to determine their boundaries.

SUMMARY:Reproductive Writes
DESCRIPTION:Join members of the C21 Reproductive Justice Collaboratory as we connect writing with reproductive freedoms. \nLearn more about the (1) history of reproductive justice; (2) how it impacts students today; and (3) explore how writing can be a tool to process reproductive experiences and act against reproductive injustices. This will be a generative session for undergraduates to consider how reproductive justice and creative practices (like writing) can aid in efforts to heal individual traumas and become a means of advocacy and political awareness. \nWe are offering two 75-minute workshop slots to increase participation! Join us for either Session #1 1:30-2:45pm or Session #2 3:30-4:45pm. Taking place in Case Commons at the UWM Student Union.

She has received honors from the Guggenheim Foundation\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, MacDowell\, the Poetry Foundation\, and the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference. She has also led workshops\, craft classes\, and craft talks for the Indiana University Writers’ Conference\, the Minnesota Northwoods\nWriters Conference\, the Yale Young Writers’ Workshop\, and more. She is an associate professor at the University of Colorado Denver\, where she is a poetry editor for Copper Nickel. \nHer latest book of poems is “Real Phonies and Genuine Fakes.”\nWhat is illusion—a deception\, or a revelation? What is a poem—the truth\, or “a diverting flash\, / a mirror showing everything / but itself”?\nNicky Beer’s latest collection of poems is a labyrinthine academy specializing in the study of subterfuge; Marlene Dietrich\, Dolly Parton\, and Batman are its instructors. With an energetic eye\, she thumbs through our collective history books—and her personal one\, too—in an effort to chart the line between playful forms of duplicity and those that are far more insidious. \nThrough delicious japery\, poems that can be read multiple ways\, and allusions ranging from Puccini’s operas to Law & Order\, Beer troubles the notion of truth. Often\, we settle for whatever brand of honesty is convenient for us\, or whatever is least likely to spark confrontation—but this\, Beer knows\, is how we invite others to weigh in on what kind of person we are. This is how we trick ourselves into believing they’re right. “Listen / to how quiet it is when I lose the self-doubt played / for so long I mistook it for music.” \n“Real Phonies and Genuine Fakes” asks us to look through the stereoscope: which image is the real one? This one—or this one\, just here? With wisdom\, humility\, and a forthright tenderness\, Nicky Beer suggests that we consider both—together\, they might contribute to something like truth.

SUMMARY:Spatiotemporal analysis of lung cancer disparity in Wisconsin\, USA
DESCRIPTION:Thesis presentation of Mathew Ugwuanyi: Studies over the United States has shown that disparity still exists in lung cancer mortality. Such disparity has been greatly attributed to several risk factors such as genetics\, socio-economic status\, comorbidities\, amongst others. Primarily\, this study aims to examine spatiotemporal variation in lung cancer mortality rates in the State of Wisconsin\, U.S.A. The study also seeks to explore the relationship between socio-economic\, environmental variables and lung cancer mortality. For this study\, lung cancer mortality county level data from the United States Center for Disease Control (CDC) and\, the National Cancer Institute’s Surveillance\, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER)\, which is aggregated and age-adjusted according to the 2000 U.S standard million population were used. Also\, county level socio-economic data like education attainment\, median household income\, unemployment and PM 2.5 data were gathered from the American Community Survey (ACS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) respectively. Scan statistics (SaTScan) will be used to analyze the spatiotemporal pattern of mortality clusters. In addition\, regression analysis will be used to assess statistical significance and measure the relationship between lung cancer mortality and county level socio-economic and environmental factors in Wisconsin. This study hopes to show potential cluster patterns in lung cancer mortality in the study area\, which might suggest uneven spatial temporal mortality risk. Also\, through findings\, we hope to suggest interventions to help ameliorate lung cancer mortality.
