SUMMARY:Combinatorial Resolutions of Monomial Ideals
DESCRIPTION:Department of Mathematical Sciences Colloquium presented by Dr. Selvi Kara\, Bryn Mawr College. \nOne of the central problems in commutative algebra concerns understanding the structure of an ideal in a polynomial ring. Abstractly\, an ideal’s structure can be expressed through an object called its minimal resolution\, but there is no explicit method to obtain a minimal resolution in general\, even for the simpler and fundamental class known as monomial ideals. \nIn this talk\, we will focus on resolutions of monomial ideals. In particular\, I will introduce a new combinatorial method that provides a resolution of any monomial ideal using tools from discrete Morse theory.

SUMMARY:Examining the urban microclimate effects on urban building energy uses in the city of Milwaukee
DESCRIPTION:Dissertation proposal presentation of Lulu Liu: Over-concentrated urban buildings and energy consumption have become one of the major reasons for the environmental deterioration in urban areas and can directly or indirectly cause urban microclimate changes. Energy consumption in urban areas has shown a rapid growth trend\, and reducing the intensity of energy consumption in urban areas has attracted the attention of many scholars. Examining the impact of different spatiotemporal climate factors on energy consumption from the perspective of urban microclimate and their spatial patterns may provide valuable policy implications on urban building energy consumption. This study has three primary goals\, including 1) estimating building energy consumption of the City of Milwaukee\, WI using historical and future weather data\, and verifying the accuracy of future energy demand predictions by comparing them to historical energy use data.; 2) examining the impact of microclimate factors on urban building energy consumption through correlation analysis and regression analysis on building and city scales; and 3) mapping future energy consumption demands over 30 years to visualize spatial and temporal differences.

SUMMARY:Integrating social\, environmental and mobility factors in studying violence in the city of Chicago
DESCRIPTION:Dissertation proposal presentation of Matthias Schilli: Violence has been studied as a social and public health issue for a long time. We investigate the violence in the City of Chicago by integrating social\, environmental\, and mobility factors in spatial statistical models. The social determinants will be based on a large number of social variables. The environmental criminological factors will be based on the Points of Interest (POI) data that provides information on the density and proximity of human activity convergence. The human mobility pattern in the city will be considered. The spatial and temporal patterns of violence in the city will be studied first\, and then all the factors will be integrated into spatial statistical models to understand how they contribute to the violence variation in the city. It is expected that this study can contribute to a more integrative approach than the public health and spatial criminological approaches to violence prevention.

SUMMARY:What’s Next? A Community Story Circle
DESCRIPTION:Part of the “Growing Resistance: Untold Stories of Milwaukee’s Community Guardians” exhibit currently showing at the Brooks Stevens Gallery at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD)\, Community guardians are common folks—homeowners\, renters\, block leaders\, elders\, and civic minded youth who make a positive impact in their neighborhoods.  The exhibition  and its affiliated events showcase voices of resistance and stories of resilience from Milwaukee’s most historically underrepresented neighborhoods. The gallery hosts student-guided tours every Friday at 11:15 am through March 2nd. \nThe event on March 2nd is at the Milwaukee Public Library\, Washington Park Branch (2121 N Sherman Blvd) and is free. Join us to share stories\, connect as a community\, and help shape our next steps. \nRegistration is required at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/whats-next-a-community-story-circle-tickets-777223074137?aff=oddtdtcreator \nThe project is funded by Wisconsin Humanities (grant to UWM)\, Wisconsin Arts Board (grant to MSOE) and MIAD.

SUMMARY:The Many Mrs. Maisels - The History of Jewish Female Stand-Up Comedians
DESCRIPTION:Before The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel\, there was a long history of Jewish female comedians\, standing up and speaking out. Although stand-up comedy is often described as a ‘boys’ club\,’ the truth is that there have always been influential women on the scene. Alongside Jewish male comics like Groucho Marx\, Lenny Bruce\, Jack Benny\, and Jerry Seinfeld\, there were pioneering Jewish female stand-ups like Jean Carroll\, Joan Rivers\, Totie Fields\, and Sarah Silverman\, offering their inimitable insights on the experience of being a Jew—and a woman—in the United States. From tackling double standards to deflating stereotypes like the “Jewish American Princess\,” Jewish female stand-up comedians have made major contributions to the way that American audiences have seen Jewish women—and the way that Jewish women have seen themselves. \nPresented by Grace Overbeke\, assistant professor in the theatre department at Columbia College. Her academic focus is in comedy studies and has been published in Shofar: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Jewish Studies\, Theatre Topics\, Theatre Annual\, The New England Theatre Journal\, Theatre Survey\, Studies in American Humor\, and The Jewish Forward. She holds a BA in theatre and English from Wesleyan University and an MA and PhD. from Northwestern University in theatre and drama. \nThe Faye Sigman Woman of Valor Lecture is made possible by the generosity of the Taxman and Temkin families. \nThis is a hybrid event with both an in-person and virtual option. Free but registration required at https://wisconsin-edu.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_MA66E_0MQU2q8Ftf05k99g#/registration \nCosponsored by UWM’s Departments of English and Women’s and Gender Studies; and programs in Digital Arts and Culture; Film Studies; and Journalism\, Advertising\, and Media Studies

SUMMARY:Insignificant Things in the Archives of Atlantic Slavery
DESCRIPTION:A Friends of Art History Lecture: What forms of visual evidence can\, and should\, one use to materialize and memorialize the history of Atlantic slavery? In this talk\, Matthew Rarey argues that this question\, far from being a contemporary ethical challenge\, was of critical importance to Africans and Indigenous people swept up in the Atlantic traffic of ideas and lives in the early eighteenth century. Critically analyzing a series of surreptitious and visually benign objects contained or referenced in colonial archives in Brazil and Portugal\, Rarey suggests that mapping the visual culture of Atlantic slavery ethically requires engaging objects produced as challenges to\, and archives of\, their makers’ experiences of displacement and diaspora. \nMatthew Rarey is Associate Professor of African and Black Atlantic Art History and the Chair of Art History at Oberlin College and Conservatory. He researches and teaches the art history of the Black Atlantic\, with a focus on connections between West Africa\, Brazil\, and Portugal from the seventeenth through twenty-first centuries. His research looks to visual and material culture to centralize Africans’ contributions to histories of slavery\, racial formation\, religion\, and commodity exchange. His first book\, Insignificant Things: Amulets and the Art of Survival in the Early Black Atlantic\, was published in 2023 by Duke University Press. \nMatthew Rarey’s biography can be viewed at: https://www.oberlin.edu/matthew-rarey
