SUMMARY:Art Works: Recent Donations to the UWM Art Collection
DESCRIPTION:GALLERY HOURS: Monday through Thursdays\, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm\nEXHIBIT RUNS: September 18\, 2023 through February 8\, 2024 \nArt Works places the spotlight on curation and research practices at the UWM Art Collection and Emile H. Mathis Art Gallery. Drawing from recent donations and featuring objects of research attention\, the exhibition emphasizes the gallery’s mission at work. \nThe UWM Art Collection and Emile H. Mathis Art Gallery are distinct in their accessibility to the public and their support of graduate and undergraduate training. Historically\, art museums and collections have been shaped by relatively few people\, and have quietly carried on collecting\, researching\, and displaying works with limited public input. Recently\, art institutions and museum scholars have begun to lift the curtain. Art Works continues this new tradition of transparency. \nThe exhibit features pieces by well-known artists such as Dale Chihuly\, Andy Warhol\, and Alexander Calder. Lesser-known – but no less significant – artists including Max Arthur Cohn\, Karen Fitzgerald\, and Carlos Hermosilla Alvarez are also presented. Art Works highlights the key players that make the Mathis Art Gallery a rich resource for all. \nArt Works: Recent Donations to the UWM Art Collection was curated by Academic Curator Leigh M.W. Mahlik and features research by former undergraduate and graduate student gallery interns\, former gallery teaching assistants\, faculty\, and gallery staff. \nSupport for this exhibition is provided by the Friends of Art History\, the Max Arthur Cohn Preservation Fund\, the Emile H. Mathis Preservation Fund\, the Department of Art History\, and the College of Letters and Sciences. \n  \nPhoto Caption: Detail of Karen Fitzgerald\, Lambent\, 2005\, oil on canvas\, Gift of Karen Fitzgerald and Kohler Foundation\, Inc.\, UWMAC 2021.006.03

SUMMARY:Who Will Remain? (film screening and talkback)
DESCRIPTION:A documentary film from the Yiddish Book Center’s Wexler Oral History Project follows one woman’s journey to understand her grandfather. \nIn an attempt to better understand her grandfather (Yiddish poet Avrom Sutzkever)\, Israeli actress Hadas Kalderon travels to Lithuania and uses her grandfather’s diary to trace his life in Vilna and his survival of the Holocaust. \nWoven into the documentary are family home videos\, newly recorded interviews and archival recordings including Sutzkever’s testimony at the Nuremberg Trial. Recitation of Sutzkever’s poetry and personal reflections on resisting Nazi forces as a partisan fighter reveal how Sutzkever tried to make sense of the Holocaust and its aftermath. \nThis film is in Yiddish\, Hebrew\, Russian and English with English subtitles. \nFree and open to the public.

SUMMARY:Book event @Boswell Books: with Jason Puskar author of "The Switch : An Off and On History of Digital Humans"
DESCRIPTION:Boswell welcomes UWM Professor of English Jason Puskar for an event featuring his latest work\, The Switch\, in which he considers how the development of binary switching\, the telegraph to the touchscreen\, has transformed everyday life and changed the shape of human agency. \nUse https://www.eventbrite.com/e/jason-puskar-author-of-the-switch-an-in-person-boswell-event-tickets-781640587037?aff=oddtdtcreator to register for the event and/or order your copy of The Switch. \nPuskar’s latest book traces a technology that has transformed life for billions of people: the binary switch. Puskar contends that there is no human activity as common as pushing a button or flipping a switch – a deceptively simple act. Far more than a technical history\, The Switch offers a cultural analysis of how reducing so much human action to binary alternatives (off or on\, one or zero\, this or that) has profoundly reshaped modern society. \nMark Goble\, author of Beautiful Circuits\, says: “Deeply ambitious and sophisticated… Puskar invites us to think more seriously about what happens almost every time we touch one of our devices and turn it on or swipe or click. From the technologies at our fingertips to the vastly larger networks of politics and language that they operate and represent\, The Switch provides a fascinating cultural history of how we have made the modern world\, and been remade in turn\, by the simplest of human actions and the connections they enable.” \nJason Puskar is author of Accident Society: Fiction\, Collectivity\, and the Production of Chance. Puskar earned a PhD in English and American Language and Literature from Harvard University as well as a MPhil in English Literature from the University of Oxford. He is a Professor at UWM.

SUMMARY:Elementary matrix operations on a napkin
DESCRIPTION:Department of Mathematical Sciences Colloquium presented by Dr. Bogdan Nica\, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. \nMatrices of determinant 1 can be reduced to the identity matrix by row- and column-operations. This is a well-known fact of linear algebra–assuming that we work with real or complex entries. A closer look reveals that the number of elementary operations needed to reduce an n-by-n matrix can be estimated as a function of n\, independently of the matrix! (Can you find such a function?) This is a phenomenon of `bounded elementary reduction’ or\, to put it differently\, of `bounded elementary generation’. \nIt is easy to ask\, but hard to answer\, whether an analogous `bounded elementary generation’ holds for matrices with integral entries (meaning that the allowed elementary operations have to be integral as well). This is now a group-theoretic question with a strong number-theoretic flavor; we have definitely left Kansas. The main goal of my talk is to give a friendly overview of `bounded elementary generation’ over the integers\, and survey its status for other rings of arithmetic nature. \nBounded elementary generation has been linked with algebraic K-theory\, Kazhdan’s property (T)\, representation rigidity\, the congruence subgroup property\, and bounded cohomology. Time permitting\, I will touch on the latter.

SUMMARY:Peace Post Unveiling & Growing Resistance Gallery Tour
DESCRIPTION:Part of the “Growing Resistance: Untold Stories of Milwaukee’s Community Guardians” exhibit currently showing at the Brooks Stevens Gallery at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design (MIAD)\, Community guardians are common folks—homeowners\, renters\, block leaders\, elders\, and civic minded youth who make a positive impact in their neighborhoods.  The exhibition  and its affiliated events showcase voices of resistance and stories of resilience from Milwaukee’s most historically underrepresented neighborhoods. The gallery hosts student-guided tours every Friday at 11:15 am through March 2nd. \nThe event on Feb. 22 includes Milwaukee Through Embodied Research dance interventions and is at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Free and no registration required. \nThe project is funded by Wisconsin Humanities (grant to UWM)\, Wisconsin Arts Board (grant to MSOE) and MIAD.

SUMMARY:Exploring cryospheric and biotic responses to warming in the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago\, Russian High Arctic
DESCRIPTION:Dissertation proposal presentation of Dean Maraldo: The Arctic is warming faster than any other region of the world\, driving significant changes in terrestrial ecosystems and the cryosphere\, including changes in vegetation phenology and the loss of lake ice\, permafrost\, and glacier mass. However\, compared to other areas of the Arctic\, climate-related changes in the Novaya Zemlya Archipelago (“NZA”)\, in the Russian High Arctic\, are not well understood. The narrow archipelago is unique\, extending northward into the Arctic Ocean and separating the Barents Sea and the Kara Sea. As a result\, all glaciers and lakes in the archipelago have greater exposure to the warmer Arctic Ocean air in the summer\, compared to other major Arctic landmasses\, such as Greenland\, where glaciers and lakes are farther inland and insulated from warmer coastal air. Therefore\, I will investigate changes in the cryosphere and vegetation in the archipelago. Specifically\, the proposed dissertation will 1) construct the longest decadal chronology of glacier change in the NZA\, extending back to the 1950s; 2) develop the first lake inventory for the NZA and analyze spatial and temporal trends in lake ice phenology for benchmark lakes throughout the archipelago; and 3) establish the first vegetation phenology baseline for the NZA and evaluate long-term vegetation change trends since 2000. The findings from the research are expected to improve our understanding of relationships between warming and changes in the cryosphere and vegetation in NZA and contribute to the literature by providing other researchers with the baseline and historical proxy data necessary to validate large scale cryosphere change\, vegetation change\, and sea level rise models.

SUMMARY:Lactation at Work: Expressing Milk\, Expressed Concern\, and the Expressive Value of Law
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Elizabeth Hoffman\, a sociologist from Purdue University\, will present findings from her research on employed mothers. She notes that\, as women entered the US workforce in increasing numbers\, they faced the conundrum of how to maintain breastfeeding and hold down full-time jobs. In 2010\, the Lactation at Work Law (an amendment to the US Fair Labor Standards Act) mandated accommodations for lactating women. Professor Hoffmann’s talk will examine the federal law and its state-level equivalent in Indiana\, drawing on two waves of interviews with human resource personnel\, supervising managers\, and lactating workers. In many ways\, this simple law — requiring break time and privacy for pumping — is a success story. Through advocacy by allies\, education of managers\, and employee initiative\, many organizations created compliant accommodations.  However\, Professor Hoffmann will also challenge the perceived success of the law as truly family-friendly or pro-woman.

SUMMARY:The Two-Parent Privilege: How Americans Stopped Getting Married and Started Falling Behind
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening with Melissa Kearney. Kearney is a renowned economist\, specializing in issues related to social policy\, poverty\, and inequality. She presents a data-driven argument for the importance of marriage in addressing economic challenges in the United States\, drawing on over a decade of economic research to demonstrate that households with two married parents\, while still prevalent among the upper class\, have become increasingly rare among other socioeconomic groups\, contributing to inequality and limiting opportunities for certain children. \nMelissa S. Kearney is the Neil Moskowitz Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland. She is also Director of the Aspen Economic Strategy Group; a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER); and a non-resident Senior Fellow at Brookings and has testified before Congress on income inequality. \nThis event is free and open to the public but a ticket is required. Reserve your spot at uwm.universitytickets.com (Linkable URL below) \nSponsored by the Tommy G. Thompson Center on Public Leadership in partnership with UWM’s Department of Economics and the Student Union.
