Milwaukee Houses of Worship: 1920-1980
September 27 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
Free
Join architectural historian Justin Miller to explore Milwaukee’s rich legacy of 20th century religious architecture. Along the way, we’ll look at unique architectural styles and historical events associated with these houses of worship.
This presentation is the result of a year-long project between UWM Cultural Resource Management, the City of Milwaukee, and the Wisconsin State Historic Preservation office. The project team visited and photographed every house of worship in the city built after 1920, identifying thirty-eight buildings and one historic district that are architecturally and historically significant and meet the criteria for inclusion in the National Register of Historic Places.
The results of the project were compiled into an intensive survey report containing a historical overview and context for various architectural styles; recommendations for historic landmark designation and future listing in the National Register; and topics which need further research and study. Copies of the report will be available at Milwaukee Public Libraries, through the Milwaukee Historic Preservation Commission, and at the Wisconsin Historical Society.
