Computer Cognition: A Cyber/Bio/Semiotic Perspective
October 5, 2018, 12:00 pm - 1:00 pmFree
A two-part program:
Brown bag lunch and discussion at 12 pm in Curtin 939
A public lecture from 3:30-5 pm in Curtin 175
In the lecture, N. Katherine Hayles considers the emergent field of biosemiotics – which argues that all living organisms generate and understand meanings appropriate to their contexts, even plants and unicellular organisms – to suggest that humans may be in the midst of entering into a deep symbiosis with computational media. She asks: Are we undergoing endosymbiosis, where previously independent organisms unite into a single entity? What are the implications of this possibility?
