{"id":42,"date":"2015-01-15T11:47:27","date_gmt":"2015-01-15T17:47:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/legal\/?page_id=42"},"modified":"2026-05-29T13:58:52","modified_gmt":"2026-05-29T18:58:52","slug":"advice","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/legal\/advice\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Legal Advice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-personal-matters\">Personal Matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Office of Legal Affairs represents the University and is not able to provide legal counsel to faculty, staff, or students regarding personal legal matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Students<\/strong> seeking personal legal advice may visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawforlearners.com\/\">Law for Learners<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>UWM employees <\/strong>seeking personal legal advice may contact UWM&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/uwm.edu\/hr\/eap\">Employee Assistance Program<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Individuals<\/strong> seeking personal legal advice may contact the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisbar.org\/forPublic\/INeedaLawyer\/Pages\/i-need-a-lawyer.aspx\">State Bar of Wisconsin<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mkebar.org\/hire-an-attorney\">Milwaukee Bar Association<\/a> for a lawyer referral.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-uwm-related-matters\">UWM-Related Matters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>UWM employees with legal questions arising in the scope of their employment are welcome to contact the Office of Legal Affairs for legal counsel. OLA attorneys rotate the handling of new matters on a weekly basis and each attorney handles a wide variety of legal matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For advice regarding a new, UWM-related legal matter, or to schedule a meeting with an attorney, please call (414) 229-4278 or email <a href=\"mailto:nehringb@uwm.edu\">nehringb@uwm.edu<\/a>. Please provide our legal support staff member with all relevant background information and documentation to ensure that the intake attorney is best prepared to respond to your inquiry. Our staff member can receive any information you consider to be confidential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-served-with-subpoena\">Served with Subpoena<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you receive a subpoena to appear as a witness regarding a matter which involves your position at UWM, contact our office for further assistance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If the matter is not related to UWM, you should contact your personal attorney.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you receive a <bdo lang=\"Latin\" dir=\"ltr\">\u201csubpoena duces tecum\u201d<\/bdo> asking you to turn over University-related documents, contact our office immediately. You should not respond or turn over any documents prior to consulting our office.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-served-with-summons-and-complaint\">Served with Summons and Complaint<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you are named individually in a lawsuit that is related to your position at UWM, you may accept service of the summons and complaint or make arrangements for our office to accept service on your behalf.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are not individually named, you should not accept service of the complaint for either UWM or any other individual named as a defendant. Do not sign any acknowledgment or waiver of service forms that come with the summons and complaint.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any time you receive a copy of a summons and complaint relating to your position at the University, contact our office immediately. Gather any materials received, and forward them to our office. We will request representation for the named defendant from the Attorney General. Under section 165.25, Wis. Stats., the Attorney General and Department of Justice may represent UWM and its employees in UWM-related lawsuits filed in state and federal court.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-notary-services\">Notary Services<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>UWM&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/hr\/notary-public\/\">Human Resources Office<\/a> offers notary services by appointment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/help.uwcu.org\/kb\/help\/content\/Prod-3518\/Branch-Services\">UW Credit Union<\/a> located in the Student Union offers notary services to its members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dfi.wi.gov\/Pages\/ConsumerServices\/NotaryPublic\/RemoteOnlineNotary.aspx\">State of Wisconsin\u2019s Department of Financial Institutions<\/a> has information regarding remote notarization.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Personal Matters The Office of Legal Affairs represents the University and is not able to provide legal counsel to faculty, staff, or students regarding personal legal matters.
