DESCRIPTION:Wednesday April 15\, 2026\n3:00pm – 4:00pm\nAmerican Geographical Society Library (AGSL)\nUWM Libraries\, 3rd floor east wing \nThis talk is part of the LACUSL Speaker Series: Join us to learn about the many topics you can study through UWM’s interdisciplinary LACUSL major (Latin American\, Caribbean\, and U.S. Latinx Studies). \nInvestigating Ancient Casmeños\, a Precolonial Urban Culture\nIn this presentation\, Professor David Pacifico will discuss the process of investigating the ancient Casma culture from the North Coast of Peru\, circa 700-1400CE. He details the methods he and others have used to find and interpret remains they left behind and how those conclusions fit into wider academic narratives. In a conversational format\, he also explains his strategy for developing his career to this point and in guiding what comes next. \nProfessor David Pacifico is Associate Professor of Art History at UW-Milwaukee\, where he researches and regularly teaches courses on the material culture of South America and Africa. He holds a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Chicago\, and has conducted archaeological fieldwork in the Casma Valley region of Peru for many years\, where he is currently Director of the Casma Hinterland Archaeological Project. Professor Pacifico’s work also promotes public engagement with archaeological heritage\, both locally in Peru and here in Milwaukee; at UWM he is on the Museum Studies Advisory Board and Director of the Milwaukee Community Archaeology Project.

SUMMARY:Building a New El Salvador Today (UWM History Brown Bag Series)
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to join the UWM History Department for the first talk of their 2026-27 Brown Bag Lunch Series. This month\, UWM’s own Brian Scott Mueller will present his ongoing research on El Salvador. The event will take place in Holton Hall\, room 341. \nBuilding a New El Salvador Today: U.S. Solidarity Activists\, Salvadoran Refugees\, and Grassroots Reconstruction in the Late Cold War\nIn a July 1986 appeal to U.S. citizens\, the National Coordination for Repopulation in El Salvador proclaimed\, “We do not want to be refugees any longer.” Within weeks\, activists in the United States joined displaced Salvadorans as they left a Honduran refugee camp and returned home to Aguacayo. After walking beside these Salvadorans\, U.S. activists returned to their own communities\, where they talked about their harrowing experiences and called for an end to U.S. military assistance to the Salvadoran government. Besides shielding refugees from military attacks amid the ongoing civil war\, some of these Americans remained in El Salvador to help the refugees rebuild their villages. In short\, U.S. activists risked their own safety to accompany Salvadorans as they repopulated and rebuilt their war-torn homes. In doing so\, they engaged in a form of prefigurative politics by reconstructing their communities in a more democratic fashion in the hope that such changes might lead to a similar transformation at the national level in the postwar era. \n  \nThese Brown Bag Lunch events are free and open to the public. We encourage you to bring your lunch and have a safe space to reflect on current events\, learn what others are doing\, and stay engaged with History Department happenings. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, Oct 22\, 2026\n2:30pm – 3:30pm\nAmerican Geographical Society Library (AGSL)\nUWM Libraries\, 3rd floor east wing \nThis talk is part of the LACUSL Speaker Series: Join us to learn about the many topics you can study through UWM’s interdisciplinary LACUSL major (Latin American\, Caribbean\, and U.S. Latinx Studies). \nBomba Bambulaé: A Community Building Tool from Puerto Rico\nIn this presentation\, Grammy Award musician and UWM graduate student Beto Torrens will speak about his decades of cultural artistry working in the tradition of Puerto Rican Bomba. Bomba is Puerto Rico’s oldest living musical tradition: it was created by our enslaved African ancestors to create communities of support between the various ethnic groups that were forced to live together in the “hacienda’s” slave barracks. Because Bomba is a living language\, it is in a constant evolutionary process. \nBeto Torrens is a Grammy Award-winning musician\, producer and educator from San Juan\, Puerto Rico. With a career that spans over 30 years professionally\, Beto’s main interest is in creating bridges between Afro – diasporic music and dance traditions from the Caribbean and the Americas. He is currently pursuing an MA in music here at UW-Milwaukee.

DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, November 19\, 2026\n2:30pm – 3:45pm\nAmerican Geographical Society Library (AGSL)\nUWM Libraries\, 3rd floor east wing\n2311 E Hartford Ave\, Milwaukee\, WI 53211 \nThis talk is part of the LACUSL Speaker Series: Join us to learn about the many topics you can study through UWM’s interdisciplinary LACUSL major (Latin American\, Caribbean\, and U.S. Latinx Studies). The LACUSL Speaker Series is free and open to the public. \nRecent Latin American Elections: Left-Right Politics Today\nJoin us for a panel discussion on recent national elections across Latin America\, and emerging regional trends in left-right politics. Speakers María Fernanda Bozmoski (Atlantic Council) and Natasha Borges Sugiyama (UWM\, Political Science) will discuss examples from Brazil\, Colombia\, Costa Rica\, and Perú and consider what these can tell us about hemispheric trends\, prospects for U.S. diplomacy\, and the state of democracy. The discussion will be moderated by Samantha Hagle (UWM\, Political Science). \nMaría Fernanda Bozmoski is Lead for Central America and Director of Impact and Operations at the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht Latin America Center\, where she leads the center’s work on Mexico and Central America and supports the director with the center’s operations. During her time at the Atlantic Council\, she has co-led the center’s Northern Triangle Task Force\, helped shape the center’s trade work\, and scheduled events in Asia for US policymakers. Bozmoski is a frequent commentator in several U.S. and regional outlets; originally from Costa Rica\, Bozmoski holds a BA in European studies (Sorbonne University\, France)\, an MA in Latin American studies and political economy (Georgetown University School of Foreign Service) and an MA in international law and human rights (United Nations University for Peace).  \nNatasha Borges Sugiyama is Professor of Political Science and Director of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at UW-Milwaukee. Her research interests lie in Brazilian politics\, policy diffusion\, social sector reform\, comparative public policy\, and gender and politics. Here at UWM she teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in these areas; she holds a PhD in Government and a Master’s in Public Affairs from the University of Texas at Austin\, as well as a BA from Oberlin College. \nSamantha Hagle holds a PhD in Political Science from our very own UWM and is now Teaching Faculty in the same department. Her primary areas of specialization are comparative politics\, international relations\, human rights\, and ethnic studies. Her current research focuses on the political rights of Indigenous populations in Latin America\, and Indigenous rights in comparative political contexts more broadly. This work aims to bring previously marginalized perspectives to our political frameworks and explores the political implications and factors of minority inclusion in domestic laws.
