The biography of Raphael Lemkin has become a highly contested topic in political debates in about the meaning of the Holocaust, the Nakba, and genocide. James Loeffler examines Lemkin’s forgotten prewar Jewish political career and its imprint on his legal thought and asks why and how this part of Lemkin’s past vanished from the historical record, and why it has yet to be. Finally, he suggests how the recovery of Lemkin’s politics helps to reframe the current political impasse in the historiography of Holocaust and genocide studies.
